Beware: VERY Comediogenic ingredients
First let me say I actually love this foundation, but am so disappointed that it contains skin damaging ingredients. It does all it promises, it’s full coverage, looks natural, feels light and comfy, and it truly lasts all day even through vigorous workouts. However, if you have the least bit acne-prone or sensitive skin you MUST BE CAREFUL to test this slowly on your face. Two of the ingredients are among the WORST known pore-clogging and skin irritating: they are sodium chloride and potassium chloride. Knowing how bad some of the ingredients are, I do not use it all over my face. I only use for spot concealing bc it really covers so well. I do think if I use it too many days in a row, I notice a breakout or two in that area.I found out recently that many products contain pore clogging and irritating ingredients, so you must read labels and do not just trust anything that says “non-comediogenic”. I’ve read many labels recently and found pore clogging ingredients in my “non-comediogenic” products! To be fair I don’t think Tarte listed this as non-Comediogenic, and it should be noted that some people do not have problems with these ingredients. Maybe you’ll be among the lucky ones. Some websites to visit for this info are: zerozits.com, caryskincare.com, and puredeming.com. Also you can just google search “Comediogenic ingredient list”. I had to take off 2 stars to account for the 2 highly Comediogenic pore cloggers contained in this product.
Super soft and smooth coverage!
I purchased this clay foundation after a horrible experience with BareMinerals new compact powder foundation. Sorry BM!!! I have somewhat dry-ish skin in the first place, so I don’t know what I was thinking!Anyway, here is what I love about Tarte Amazonian Clay:The shade, “Fair” is spot on for my pinkish pale skin. The texture is so unique, smooth and creamy, but not greasy at all! It has a great finish that is neither matte nor shiny. Just perfect.. maybe luminous? :)The coverage is perfect for me, but I wouldn’t say FULL coverage. It is more like medium to full. I don’t have acne problems, but there are definitely some freckles I would like to see go away, but I see hints of them under this foundation. It also probably doesn’t last 12 hours. Maybe it’s my job of teaching art to a bunch of kids all day, but it starts to wear off around hour 9 or so… Not to shabby though! The one thing I do not like about this is the price. I mean.. close to $40?? That is pretty high. Maybe I’m cheap (ok, I’m definitely cheap) but that just seems kinda much. I guess I’ll have to put away a dollar a day or something! 🙂
Decent foundation for normal to combination/oily skin
This foundation contains kaolin. While there is nothing “special” about Amazonian clay in particular, the ingredient of kaolin has oil absorbing properties, which makes this foundation good for combination to oily skin. Due to the kaolin, this probably isn’t a great choice for dry skin. I also notice that it highlights any dry patches. My skin is incredibly sensitive and this foundation doesn’t break me out at all. It is oil free and has good ratings from beautypedia in terms of comedogenic properties. My skin is very oily at the T zone and normal on my cheeks. I use this foundation with a primer (Estee Lauder Mattifying) and it helps the foundation last longer. Without a primer, it won’t last all day on me. I apply a small blob on the back of my hand and use the Tarte foundation brush to apply. I dab it on my face and then buff it in with circular motions. It melts in seamlessly. I spray with setting spray (Urban Decay De Slick), as I do with all foundations and top with some Mac Mineralize Skin Finish natural. Unfortunately, while this foundation looks great for 5-6 hours, it starts to break down. This foundation starts to look like clay cracking on my skin on my T-Zone. Thus, while I can eek out a full day’s wear in the winter, once the weather gets hot, this foundation looks awful at the end of the day. There’s no way to rescue it and touch up nicely in hot weather.I wear this foundation in “Medium.” I am an NC30 in Mac and my Mac Mineralize Skin Finish is in the shade Medium Plus. The finish is satin matte. It isn’t as matte as Estee Lauder doublewear or Hourglass Immaculate. I actually prefer a satin matte finish most of the year. I get a LOT of compliments on my skin when I wear this foundation in the winter. My skin looks healthy and natural. It also feels light on my skin and leaves it soft. When I wear it I often get compliments on my beautiful skin. I even had a MAC makeup artist compliment my skin at a MAC makeup counter when I was wearing this foundation. This is one of my favorite foundations for work in cool weather. For summer, however, I avoid it.The Tarte Foundation brush is the best brush for this foundation. I’ve experimented with other brushes, but the Tarte brush really gives the most natural, airbrushed finish. However, the downside of THAT brush is that it’s really huge, making it difficult to work around the crevices of the nose. I like to use the Real Techniques Expert Face brush to work the foundation around my nose. If you’re going to get this foundation, please note that it needs to be worked into the skin. You need a buffing brush with bristles that will really let you work it in. If you opt not to get the Tarte brush, try the Real Techniques Expert Face brush. The bristles are similarly dense though the brush head is a lot smaller. I’ve also heard that the Sigma Flat Topped Kabuki works well with this foundation. Also, this foundation is a good value. It is priced very similarly foundations from other brands – e.g., Estee Lauder, Lancome – but you get a lot more product. Each tube is 1.7 oz compared to the typical 1 oz. I think it’s $3 or $4 more than Double Wear, but with better packaging and more product.Summary: This is a pretty good foundation in cool weather, but I can’t say that it is my holy grail foundation. I continue to be intrigued by other foundations because this one DOES break down a bit during the day even in winter and requires some blotting and a touch up or two with powder. In summer it’s really not good at all. Maybe its better for people with a less oily complexion.
Flawless, natural looking coverage
Amazonian Clay Full Coverage 12 hour foundationI have a lot of issues when it comes to my face. I have a lot of redness and bumpiness on my cheeks and chin. Even though the bumpiness isn’t an issue on my nose and forehead, redness definitely is. I very seldom get acne, but I would describe my skin as oily, especially on my nose and cheeks. In addition, I also have very sensitive skin. I have to be really careful about what chemicals I put on my face. I have had used a couple of products that made my face feel like it was on fire. I’ve had many more that caused me to itch like crazy. Even though I always purchase products that are hypoallergenic or made specifically for sensitive skin, a lot of them still make me itch.I have tried many different types of foundation. I have tried some very cheap ones (NYC and Hard Candy) I have also tried most of the mid-priced store brands (Loreal, Maybelline, Merle Norman, Avon, and Mary Kay. I’ve even used a Clinique foundation. But regardless of how much I pay or where I purchase it, the result is always the same. It looks great when I first apply it, but after a short time, (generally 4 hours or less) the shine and redness start peeking through again. I had almost given up hope. I started to think that maybe my expectations for a foundation were unrealistic. Obviously, things like oil-free and suitable for sensitive skin are important, but for me, the three things I was most looking for were1. Lightweight2. Full, yet natural coverage3 Long lastingThe amount I’ve been spending on foundation has slowly been creeping up, so I decided maybe it was time to consider a high-end foundation. I spent about 3 days researching different foundations and reading reviews. Finally, I narrowed it down to 4 I was interested in trying. This product was the most expensive of the 4. This foundation is somewhat pricey, so I didn’t want to invest in a foundation I wasn’t even sure I was going to like. I read a lot of positive reviews of this foundation online, but honestly, I was skeptical. It just seemed too good to be true. Rather than shelling out the money for a full tube right away, I decided to see if I could somehow get a free sample. I felt a little silly. But I went to Sephora and asked if they did free samples of foundation. I expected the lady to laugh at me, but she was very nice. She said “That’s not a crazy question at all. We are actually really big on samples. You can sample any product in the store.” I also explained that I wasn’t exactly sure what shade I needed. She said she would help me with that as well. I thought I needed either needed Medium or Light Medium. It turns out that the Light Medium was a perfect match to my skin. I was given a very generous free sample and couldn’t wait to try it. But I was also nervous. I’d felt disappointed with so many other cosmetics, that I didn’t really expect anything else from this product. Online reviews recommended applying it with a brush, so I purchased a cheap make-up brush and applied it that way. After applying this product for the first time, I was blown away when I looked in the mirror. It covered the bumps and redness completely, given me a flawless, natural look. It also feels incredibly light on my face. It feels like my natural skin, not cakey or like I’m wearing a mask. But I knew the real test was still to come: How long would it last? Some previous reviewers did state that this foundation didn’t last 12 hours, so I was a little worried. But I figured even if it lasted 8 hours it was an improvement over other products. I applied this product the first day at about 7 am. It still looked great when I removed it at around 10:30 that night. It hadn’t faded or worn off at all. I was little concerned that this product might be difficult to remove. But a make-up remover wipe removed it with no problem whatsoever.Update 4-4-13When I first got the sample of this product and started using it, I loved it. I thought I had found my go-to foundation. So I purchased a full-sized tube. But the longer I used it, the less I liked it. This foundation doesn’t feel heavy on your face, but it does get very cakey and powdery when it dries. I also found it difficult to apply evenly. In some places, I would get it too thin and in others too thick. It also wore off where I am most oily (my cheeks and especially my nose.) I also started to notice that this foundation rubs off very easily. One day I was trying on shirts. I was wearing a turtleneck and a tee-shirt. When I pulled my turtleneck up over my head, I immediately noticed that I had a good amount of foundation on the inside of my turtleneck. I felt less and less confident in this foundation as time went on. I also wasn’t crazy sbout the texture of this foundation. It’s kind of weird. It’s somewhere between a liquid and a cream. I realized that I prefer a liquid foundation. I also want something that will cover well yet will blend into my skin. Previous reviews have mentioned they didn’t think the coverage of this makeup wasn’t matte enough. In my opinion, the coverage of this makeup is much too matte for my liking.I would recommend getting a free sample of this product, and trying it at least a week before buying a full-sized tube. I would also recommend getting matched at a place like Sephora or Ulta so you are sure to get the right shade. I can definitely understand why there are so many positive reviews for this product. It lives up to its promises and offers great coverage. But I realized I had been hasty in purchasing a full-sized tube. I ultimately ended up returning the full-sized tube. This just wasn’t the right foundation for me.In my opinion, a much better alternative to this product is Boots No 7 Beautifully Matte. It is available at Target and online for around $14.00 It is hypoallergenic, oil free, contains sunscreen, stays on all day, and is very lightweight. It provides full coverage, yet looks very sheer. It doesn’t look heavy or artificial at all. It is also sweatproof. I started sweating like crazy recently while wearing this makeup. I blotted my face with a papertowel. I expected to see a ton of my foundation on the paper towel as well. But there was NOTHING! It still looked great! It has given me everything I was looking for at a fraction of the price of Amazonian Clay and Estee Lauder Double Wear. When choosing a shade, realize they they come in pairs. There are two choices each for light, medium and deep. The first shade in the pair is for warm tones and the second is for cool tones. Warm skintones tend to have yellow undertones. Cool skintones tend to have pinkish undertones. In my opinion, the best way to determine your skin tone is to look at the veins in your wrist. If they appear greenish, then you have a warm skin tone. If they look bluish, then you have a cool skintone. If you can’t tell, then you have neutral skin tones. Most people tend to have warm skintones. But I discovered that I have cool skintones. So I chose to purchase the shade “Cool Beige” It was a perfect match for my skin. Give the Boots No 7 Beautifully Matte a try. I promise you won’t be disappointed. A great product for a great price.
This is the best liquid foundation I have ever used. I have extremely oily skin, and everything I’ve ever tried has made me break out, including the Revlon Colorstay that people rave about. That junk just sunk right into my pores and I’d break out in less than a minute.I went to Ulta, asking about primers for oily skin, and what kind of liquid foundation to use, because I’ve tried so hard to find something that will not just cover, but also not make my face worse. When I said I have acne, the first thing she asked was, “Do you have combination skin?” When I said no just straight up oily, she then brought me to the Tarte section. So I knew this stuff would work. I was so glad she asked that, because so many foundations that claim to be for acne, also stupidly have moisturizer in them, and not everyone with acne has combination skin. It’s really hard to find makeup that doesn’t have “hydrating formula” or “tinted moisturizer” or something else on the label.I didn’t know how well this work. I was truly astounded. It doesn’t sink into my pores, and it covers tremendously well. I have blotchy acne, real acne, not just a few pimples here or there. I have to go through a whole process of makeup to cover my face completely. Here’s how to use this, or any liquid foundation really, on oily skin:First, you have to start with a primer, or a pore minimizer. Then the concealer.THEN the liquid. Finally, the powder, to bring it all together. \This was definitely the most expensive makeup product I’ve ever bought, but I don’t regret it a bit. This, plus the other few things I bought that day, really helped me feel confident and beautiful like I’ve never felt before.
Foundation made in heaven
I am a 29 year old woman with oily/acne prone skin and large pores. This foundation is great. I’ve used it with the Tarte clean slate primer and I’ve also used it alone.Texture of foundation is very creamy and dries nicely leaving a nice glow. It’s very easy to blend and work with. It can be applied lightly or a little heavier for problem skin. With Primer: When I wore this to work I applied the Tarte Clean slate primer and it lasted all day. It didn’t transfer onto clothing or my cellphone. It made my face look flawless and my pores were not visible. It doesn’t crease or get into fine lines.Without Primer: I wore this alone and went to Disney world. It lasted about 8 hours in Florida weather, heat, humidity and rain. After hours of sweating and the effects of the weather I could honestly say this foundation is a champ.Would I buy this again? HECK yeah!!!!This foundation is full coverage, without making you look cakey. It didn’t break me out and I have very sensitive skin.It lasted allllllll day and photographs beautifully.I wish I could post pictures of just how nice this lasted all day. I know it’s a bit pricey however it’s totally worth it.
Best Makeup Ever for Humidity — Florida
Finally! I have a fair complexion with an olive/yellow undertone. I have NEVER found the perfect shade before. And when I have gotten close, I didn’t love the texture or the coverage. This makeup makes me look FLAWLESS without looking cakey or made-up. I love the more natural ingredients. I love that it takes a tiny but to do my entire face. I love that I don’t need powder. I love that it lasts all day and I look fresh and natural. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS MAKEUP. I have neither oily nor dry skin. No T Zone issues. I wear a light sunscreen moisturizer under this foundation. The light-sand is great for my winter paleness and the sand is perfect for summer. I can’t believe my good fortune trying this on a whim. Find your shade — this makeup is amazing. I love the mascara too.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE
Great for all types of skin! I purchased for myself then bought another for my daughter. She loves it too!
I wanted so much to love this foundation it goes on looking so gorgeous but I have oily/combo skin and even after applying a primer I still needed to continuously blot my face. Plus the transfer that occurs with this foundation is crazy so I cannot say it is long wearing. Unfortunately it does not work for me and I much prefer the Mac prolong-wear foundation for my particular skin type
Wonderful! 20% off on their website! Tarte vs Bare Minerals
I recently switched all of my cosmetics to clean and safe products. There are a lot of nasty chemicals in makeup because the industry is not regulated and I decided that I didn’t want those chemicals in my body! Tarte is a fantastic brand and I love this foundation! I went into Sephora to get color matched, don’t buy a foundation without trying it on for color matching! My color is Light-Beige and I am formerly N4 in M.A.C.’s Studio fix. I have light neutral skin with pink undertones. I purchased all of my Tarte products directly from their web site with free shipping and a 20% off coupon for my entire order! You need a dense kabuki style brush for the foundation to apply properly and without streaks, this gives a very natural finish (it looks just like your skin, it’s truly amazing). Tarte makes a nice bamboo brush but I prefer mySigma F82 – Round Kabuki brush. This foundation matches my color so perfectly, I am just amazed! After I apply, it dries very quickly into a soft matte finish that is just lovely. My skin feels velvety soft with this on and it looks flawless without giving a fake look! I also tried the Bare Minerals liquid foundation, but the Tarte Amazonian Clay liquid foundation is thicker (but feels weightless when you wear it) and has much better coverage on the first application than the Bare Minerals. Tarte also lasted the entire day, while Bare Minerals did not. I was, also, unable to get a good color match with Bare Minerals.
