A rather amazing product if used correctly and depending on hair needs/type

Not everyone is gonna love Kinky Curly Curling Custard. Not everyone is gonna be clearly aware of how best to apply Kinky Curly CC. I will say that as a gal with very dry, very curly, 3b type, highly porous biracial hair, this is one of those choose to have in my hair arsenal. (We know that weather changes will affect what products we use, and we learn what our hairs like best). I get beautiful curls, root wave/curl and lift, and volume. It gives a more relaxed curl definition (ie increased length) than some other excellent curl enhancers/stylers, like Curl Junkie’s CURLS IN A BOTTLE (which I also use and love). If you have curly to kinky hair (anywhere from 2b through 4a), I think you can find a way to make this work for you. It’s essentially a curl defining viscous styling product. The consistency is…”snotty”, but the scent is lovely and fresh. Some describe it as a “snickerdoodles” smell. I call it “vanilla cake batter.”It’s also expensive, so if you choose to invest in it (and Whole Foods carries it and Knot Today), do it right. I strongly recommend you go to YouTube and to NaturallyCurly and CurlTalk websites and Curlmart to watch videos, read reviews, and read threads on how to properly use. It will help IMMENSELY. Buy the 8oz first, not the 16, so if you hate it or can’t get up to speed on the usage learning curve, you don’t feel so bad. :)Now, what I recommend for defined, soft, shiny, less frizz-prone curls: Buy the system. The Come Clean hair cleanser/shampoo, the Knot Today detangler/leave-in, and the Curling Custard. If you choose to forego the shampoo, do not forego the Knot Today. I find that Knot Today is the base where the custard thrives. Some use a combing/raking method for applying the CC. Some use the scrunching. Both will work. Scrunching works for the less tight curl hair types. Raking for tighter/kinkier hair. I use a combo (I brush/rake it through with fingers and a Denham brush on very wet hair, then use the SuperSoak method to make my hair clump more, then add some more in a scrunching method.) The Knot Today melts away tangles and moisturizes/softens. The Curling Custard gives curl definition and hold. Many gals use gel too, after the CC to give more hold.Essentially, the combo of Knot Today and Curling Custard is a great duo for assorted curl/kink types, but the technique does need t be learned/mastered. Do homework. Watch the videos, read the reviews with tips. It’s got tons of great natural ingredients, smells fabulous, works beautifully, and gets rave reviews from a wide variety of “curlyheads” at curly hair forums. This product will increase drying time for most users, know that. You may need to diffuse hair or plop or something to speed up drying time. I pixie-curl with a diffuser and get excellent results, though more frizz in the canopy than if I air-dry.I also recommend you buy elsewhere. This seller has outrageous price and shipping charges. A 16 ouncer shouldn’t be more than about 30 bucks. Whole Foods carries this, as does AveYou and CurlMart and the official site sells it, too. Don’t get ripped off.

Naturals… have no fear!

This is the best product for kinky-coily hair – PERIOD! It defines and elongates curl, eliminates frizz and maintains style for DAYS! I just ordered 2 more jars and I always have 1 jar in my stash! You will not be disappointed with this product. It does everything it says it does. Best results when you combine with the Knot Today, but favorable (very good) results are achieved without it!

not horrible, but certainly not amazing

My hair is a combination of 3b, 3c, and 4a, and i didnt enjoy this product. It was ok when i tried to use it for two strand twists. The smell is majorly overwhelming and the product is sticky and reminds me of elmers glue.I didnt use this product along with the others in the kinky curly line, i simply cant afford that. I dont even do that with product lines that ive enjoyed (curls unleashed, curls, as i am naturally). Perhaps using this along with the shampoo and conditioners aids in great curls. Im too broke to find out if thats true.Ive seen others that have had wonderful results with this product and thats great; i know firsthand what its like to have difficulties finding a product thats just made for me. It just didnt do much for my hair. I cant say to the reader to not purchase this hair custard as it may work for them.

Didn’t Work Well With My Hair.

This product is CG Friendly, smells great, and does make your curls “Pop”, but it also makes your hair crunchy, and instead of moisturizing my hair it dried it out. I also think it’s incredibly overpriced. It definitely didn’t work wonders for me!

I know its just my hair. You have to already have curly hair, or use a product before that could enhance the curl.Because, I have natural black curly/wavy hair. But I did the ombre on my hair, so my ends are bleached/dyed, and so when I used this, my roots and top was so curly and cute, but the ends was straight. It was wack. I hated it.And I like my hair straight anyways, just becuz I dont like my face when I have curly hair (turn into a different person) lol but, I bought this for those times I have a work out kick, and I Zumba, so you sweat ALOT.And I have hair that holds alot of heat.So I cant just work out and be fine. No, I work out and sweat crazy, sit under a fan to cool my scalp.Go get the hot comb and flat iron, fix it.Wrap again.Take my shower. Then I can feel my hair wet and damp. Then I spend another hour fixing my hair.Sigh LOL so I bought this, so I could rock my natural hair for a bit.But I just dont like how my hair looks with it.Im sure it will work for all the naturals.

Love this Product

My hair regime is wash and go, so of course I would love this product. I have naturally curly hair so I tried this product and I love it in my hair. If you already have naturally curly hair this product will just moisturize your hair and keep the frizz away which is a plus. You only need to use a little amount. I have used the Knot Today as a leave in conditioner alone and I have used the Kinky Curly alone and I have used them both together. I prefer just using only one product; not both together. My hair is very moisturized and never dry or frizzy or flaky.

throw away everything else you’ve been using…

…for curl definition. THIS IS IT!!! A little bit of this KCCC goes a long way and definitely doesn’t leave a white residue (like another curl defining product that shall remain nameless).Doesn’t leave your hair hard and crunch…once you try it, you’ll throw away all of those other products you’ve been using.

KINKY-CURLY IS DA BOMB ! !

On a scale of 1 to 5- I give this product a rating of 10!! WOW- This stuff is the bomb. I am 4a/b hair type and recently did the big chop. So I am rock’n a TWA. I was leary about using this product because my natural hair is only 2 inches long and I was worried about shrinkage. This product defines my pretty curls and coils and I look HOT!!! PLEASE NOTE, YOU MUST USE THE PRODUCT AS RECOMMENDED. Meaning, before you apply the KC Curling Custard, You’ll want to apply the KC Knot today first and of course, only apply to freshly washed and conditioned hair. I’m sold out on this stuff. A little goes along way and you have to apply it in sections. If you glop in on, you’ll get stiff caked up hair.

Definition out of this world!

This product works great if you use it right. I used it years ago and it was amazing, but pricey so I stopped. Here I am now revisiting because, well it works! I really wanted somethin cheaper to work better, but it just doesn’t. I’m an African-American natural with 4a/4b hair, but I see this working for everyone really. It works best for me on wet hair after washing. I apply in this order (water, oil, kinky curly), then air dry. I don’t have to reapply much or any throughout the week. I just spritz with my (conditioner, oil, water) bottle and it revives my curls. The definition is out of this world!! Curls, curls, curls, curls, curls I do adore! Your curls feel moisturizing and not extremely hard and crunchy like you would think a gel would leave it.

I love it!!!!!!!

There are sooo many things to love about this product. It’s all-natural, and smells like sweets! It’s very moisturizing, and it’s pH is around 4.5-5.0, which is what hair needs, to have smooth cuticles and be frizz-free. It’s “hold” is medium IMO when you use a moderate amount. If you glob it on, of course your hair will be hard.It has a learning curve. You need to figure out the amount to use for your hair, and by what means you will apply it. You can rake it in, shingle it… Check me out on youtube for my tutorials, as well as a review of the full Kinky-Curly line.I suggest that you use it with Knot Today for maximum results. I am not just saying that. I’ve used it for a few years now, and the styles just turn out better. You are going to want to shampoo your hair, and use Knot Today. Don’t apply any oils or butters. It is important that the hair be WET. This product does not turn kinks into curls. That means that you must have naturally curly hair that clumps together. I am 4a. Some people with 4b/cnapp hair are not going to be able to use this. The curling custard leaves you with piecy defined curls. No frizz. Whereas regular gels give you more of a “clumped” look. It just depends on what you’re going for. I don’t mind paying for quality ingredients. If you co-wash, you’ll be glad to know it rinses right out in the shower. No residue. Overall, it’s a great product once you learn how to use it.

Do not buy from this retailer(Revised)

This is my first review on Amazon. I love Amazon! But go to the Kinky-Curly website to buy this product. The price here is exorbitant to the point where it must be a typo.Revised: Looks like the original price has been lowered to a more sane price point. Kudos!

love it

I am new to natural hair, and I was looking for a leave in or other that would really make my curls pop, and I got great results with this, I think I have 3c hair, not too sure this trying to figure it out, it thick and curly but not tight curls. I also bought the kinky curly not today because they said it works best together. I went on the kinkycurly site to see how best to use the product, and realized I had to wash out the knot today before I added the curling custard for my type of hair, and this is the best product so far, it makes my curls pop pop pop, i just love it and will be reordering. I also add vatika coconut oil to the wet hair after applying the custard andwhen my hair drys it still look moist only thing is the curls shrink but I dont mind because its curly all over, curls curls everywhere

Use this with the knot today leave in conditioner for the best results. Youtube has some really good reviews. So check that out and purchase this with confidence.

Kinky Curly Curling Custard

I have 4a-4b hair and I must say that this stuff is the best when it comes to giving my hair definition. I like this more than mixed chics leave in or the Aveda b-curly leave in. To start, I part my hair into four sections and from there make smaller sections as if I am applying a relaxer to my hair. I use just enough product to coat my fingers. I smooth it on my hair and use my fingers to comb it through. What ever you do, DON’T comb your hair as you are applying the product, otherwise you will have freeze. Also, have a water bottle near buy to wet the sections of your hair that become dry before you have applied the product. The best thing about this product is the fact that you don’t need to reapply it daily. Just spray a little water in your hair in the morning and then you are set to run out of the door. There are a number of youtube videos that allow you to see first hand the best way to apply this product.here is a link […]

Love it for 3a/b hair

This is my holy grail product for my 3a/b (Botticelli) hair. I use it mixed with Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (about 3/4 KCCC, 1/4 BRHG) and it gives me perfect, bouncy curls. I want the hard cast because I’m looking for firm hold, but it scrunches out beautifully. I use about two quarter’s worth for my hair, which is very thick and slightly above bra strap length when wet. Sometimes I use it over Kinky Curly Knot Today, but not always, and I haven’t had any trouble using it over other products. For next day hair, I usually just smooth/scrunch a bit of water, then a couple of drops of camellia oil, or sometimes a little Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Milk mixed with a drop or two of oil. Perfect.Just updating, since I now have more experience with the custard. Still love it, still use it all the time, still works great for me. I’m not sure why, but I use it over all kinds of leave ins and have never had any problems. I actually don’t use KCKT anymore, because I like other products better. I’ve used it over Tresemme Naturals, Darcy’s Botanicals Pumpkin Seed conditioner, Curl Junkie Strengthening Conditioner, CJ Coffee-Coco Curl Cream, a few other CJ products, SheaMoisture Curl & Style Milk, etc. So while I know people do have problems sometimes if they don’t stick with KCKT, it’s not necessarily a requirement.

Curl Activator

I know that in a world of paid reviews honest ones are seen as "unhelpful", but… this really is a horrible product. When you consider the price especially, it’s not worth the risk unless you’ve just got the money and time to burn. My best advice is to test this out when you have no plans if you really
• have
• to try this. It is slow to dry, it will create tighter curls, and it does create a product-y look. Yes, even on soaking wet hair. Yes, even when you don’t use a lot of product. Yes, it’s like a
• horrible
• 1980s nightmare if you have long hair.I would be forgiving with the stars if I believed this product could work on some other hair type apart from my own. If you are looking for a soft and natural look, this just isn’t the product for you. I tried this on my 3B hair and had to cancel plans! I gave it to my mother who has a 3C pattern (with sections for 4A I think) and it did not work any better on her hair.I don’t mind products that make my curls tighter, but I don’t care for the juicy product-heavy look at all. Plain and simple… it’s slimy, over priced, curl activator.

Does it all

I have wavy to curly hair and this stuff does the work of all products. My only complaint is it takes longer for my hair to dry when I use it, and it takes a while to dry anyway. So I wash it at night, put this stuff in and go to bed with damp hair. In the morning, I have no frizz and lots of curl. It can be crispy sometimes, but scrunching or using a curling cream before using the custard cuts that down.

Great even for fine wavies

I am a 2C with fine waves, and I love this product! It’s Curly-Girl-friendly, and has no silicones or sulfates. The scent is divine and lingers a bit on your hair once it dries, and you only need a small amount to coat your hair. I dip two fingertips in at a time to pick up a small glob, and then scrunch that amount into various sections of my hair, with a new dip for each new section.Since my waves don’t last, I do need to top this with a hard-hold gel likeBiosilk Rock Hard Gel 6 Ouncesafterwards. The only downside is that this makes it take forever for your hair to dry! For that reason, I only use it every few washes since I usually don’t have that much time to take. It also seems to work best withKinky Curly Knot Today Conditioner, 8 ozunderneath it.Also, I’ve had my tub for about 18 months, and it’s still fresh, even with keeping it my shower. This is a great product, and is one of my Holy Grail hair products!

Really a 3 and a half rating…

First, I RECOMMEND that you buy the product on Kinky Curly’s site or at Wholefoods instead of purchasing it here. The product’s listing price is 29.99, not 39.99.Anyway, my hair has curls and kinks, maybe considered a mix of 3c and 4a…and I find it enhances my curly hair but on the naps, it doesn’t really do anything. Also, this doesn’t make my hair feel moisturized since it has a gel consistency. Also, for most Black hair types, your hair has to be soaking wet since that is when the curls are less frizzy and most defined. So, overall, I find you have to use more product which means it doesn’t last long…One thing I appreciate is since it’s clear I can just up and go without worrying about it drying clear like another pudding I use. I also feel like it is over-priced, albeit it is natural since it goes fast. For very kinky hair, it won’t make your hair curly. Use it for twist outs or finger styling.Overall, not a bad product but there are better curl definers than this product.

Too much Breakage when left in for a week

I put the product in my hair as described. Used very little from the jar. It is summer time and I wanted to start my wash and go’s again, but with some moisture and softness. The product is great depending on your hair type. I have several different hair types. My hair is fine, thin, kinky, coily, and some areas are wavy and some are straight, but mostly coily. And it depends on how I dry it. Which I only air dry, but what I mean is…if I let it return to its shrunken state without stretching it in any manner. Well, the application went well, and it lasted for a week, but I noticed that more of my hair was coming out during the co-wash than normal. This is the second time I have tried KCCC and this will be my last. I had heard that some women had experienced more or unusual loss of hair with this product, but I have never left in my hair longer than a day before because it was just to sticky and wet…before. This product just has too much sugar in it for hair. It should be taken off the market. And I only used the product for the application. I applied curl activator for more moisture or to spruce up the curls in the morning. I shampooed it out and then did a co-wash, and my hair responded as usual. I will be sticking with my conditioner and curl activator alone. Thank God I saved my receipt.

will not go without this product!

This product gives me the best definition of my life. I have a mixture of textures from 3b in the bottom to 3c and 4a in the back. With this product my curls are bouncy and perfectly separated. Shrinkage is not very evident. The consistency of this is more like a gelee. somewhat watery and a bit tacky The smell is very strong, yes. so strong that a day later I can still smell it as i’m typing this. If you air it out well it should not be a problem, but since I wash at night and then pineapple the scent tends to lingers. It sort of smells like marshmallow and vanilla.I bought this back when I was transitioning and never used it. I attempted to use it when I did my chop, using the shingling method, but found the result was too shrunken with lots of inconsistency, because the back was fro-ish while the rest of the hair wasn’t. I discovered the curly girl method and looking for the perfect definition I tried 3 different eco styler gels for a period of 2 months (argan, olive and "sport")… with crunchy, sort of wavy results throughout. It wasn’t bad, but I kept wondering if that’s all my hair could do. Using the same method I had with the previous gels, being very generous with the amount of water in my hair at all times, I revisited this product. The results were great! My curls are spirally, not crazy wavy or weirdly clumpy. The smaller curls in the back are elongated and clearly defined! Which is honestly all I ever wanted (for my textures to mostly blend with each other). As a result, my hair just hangs more. I truly believe this product can work for anyone within my ranges of hairtype if layered properly and the right amount is used. People say the eco gels are the same thing. I did not have any bias towards this product and yet I can say the results just can’t compare (on me). It’s true, this thing makes your hair take forever to dry… I always use a diffuser as part of my routine (on halfway dry hair) so it’s not really a problem beyond that. As for beyond that: I do not experience any flaking or dryness. No "wet look". No crunch beyond the first day. The results on me last about 3 days before it starts looking fluffed, but I do not re-apply or re-wet my hair between washes (I rock a puff the rest of the week). If you do the results might last longer. This 16 oz. container is $29.99 on the kinky curly website. You certainly get a good amount and it is of good quality but I’d certainly welcome it being cheaper! I see other reviews saying it’s too expensive here, but compared to the price, plus shipping there isn’t a big difference really. so notice the complains about the price might be a reflection of previous sellers.

This is awesome, I love the natural ingredients like marshmallow. Staple Product in my Curly Girl Regimen

I am half black/Asian and have 3A/3B curls. My hair is VERY frizz prone and is of med/long length. It took A LOT of trial an error, but I have finally figured out how to use this properly with my hair type and other products. I’ve tried MANY different products in all different price brackets, but always find myself coming back to the Kinky Curly.I start with the "As I Am Coconut Cowash". This is a great cleansing product for naturally curly hair and leaves my hair cleansed and moisturized. After rinsing, still in the shower, I apply the "As I Am Leave in Conditioner". A good leave in conditioner is essential for my hair type. I then pin my hair up in a clip until I get out.Once out of the shower, I do not dry my hair AT ALL. I leave it sopping wet, and just use a t-shirt to place around my shoulders to catch the drippage. At most, I will wring out excess water in the shower before pinning it up, but even that is done lightly. I then take my hair down in sections to apply my styling product starting with the back. I’ve recently discovered "Hair Chemist Coconut Oil Serum" and it has become one of my new Holy Grail products. It is lightweight, but very moisturizing, and my hair loves it. Depending on how large the section, I use one or two pumps and rake through the section with my fingers. I can instantly feel my hair get smoother and softer. Once the serum is applied, I apply about a nickel sized amount of Kinky Curly to the same section, raking with my fingers, and making sure to coat evenly. Once completely coated I scrunch and move on to the next section.Once my whole head is done, I flip my hair over and scrunch it all again until I see the desired amount of clumping in my curls. I do not use a comb or brush during this entire process, just my fingers and the products. Keeping my hair flipped over, I then dry with a diffuser to about 80% dry. My hair dries to an almost crunchy state. I let it air dry while I apply makeup and finish getting dressed. Once I am done getting dressed, I then use a couple pumps of the Coconut Oil Serum, flip it back over, and then scrunch out the crunchiness using the serum. The end result is light, bouncy, beautiful, shiny curls with no frizz whatsoever. This is a fantastic product, but I am, however, shocked at the price it’s listed for here. I get mine from Target for $16.99. $32 is just absurd.

Works Quite Well

This brand was recommended to me a while back but I avoided it because the name and packaging turned me off. I finally tried three products in the line: Come Clean Shampoo, Knot Together Leave-In Conditioner, and the Curling Custard. Together, they work well to clean and define my curls. Be careful not to put to much in. The recommendations of trying a dime- or quarter-sized amount are sound.
