Design flaws in the tube/applicator make it impractical to use
I received this (through my husband’s Prime account) a couple weeks ago and am a bit underwhelmed. The color is nice in the bottle but doesn’t appear much browner or lighter than your everyday dark brown/espresso. Not a big worry, though…The main issue is the applicator. Even though it’s a small item, the distance between the swirls in the brush is wide enough to synch your lashes together and make for pretty obnoxious clumps. I use an eyelash brush to separate my lashes, but when I do so after the mascara is dried in order to provide more individual-standing lashes, it flakes off literally half of the product I just applied, onto my cheeks. It’s actually pretty rough – like getting tangles out of your hair. I tried cleaning and then using a brush from another mascara, but while it would fit down into the tube, it wouldn’t close because of a different sized top.As other reviewers noted, there’s also the issue of plunging – for lack of a better word! I can barely pull the applicator out without mascara building up outside the top lip of the tube. Putting it back in makes even more product ooze out and eventually there will be so much outside the tube that the applicator is going to seal it shut. So I clean it off every day, losing a lot of product – a sad waste.I’m a little surprised this has reviewed so well, and that’s the reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 – maybe it’s just me. I had high hopes because it seems like a stellar ingredient list, especially for the price. Alas, I won’t be buying this again.*****************************Update one week later:I downgraded my rating from 2 stars to 1 – which reflects my real reaction anyway – because I realized part of the reason why people have given it good reviews: many of them are VINE reviewers. This means they get the product for free and try it for a day or two to test it out & rate it. The products are often not given enough time to see how they really work and to build up the issues I noted above.
This is not the best mascara I’ve ever used, but nice enough that I will use it up and then probably go back to Clinique. It seemed a bit thick to me, but I didn’t have the problems others were having with smudging, flaking, not drying, etc. I did end up using my eyelash comb with it because it did clump. But I can deal. Don’t expect a lot from it, I guess is what I’m saying.
you won’t regret it.
i’ve been using this mascara for decades. it never hurts, it comes off with water, never runs or looks gross. it just evaporates. never hurts my eyes. it’s a must. and the mirror on the jar is handier than you think for touch ups
The best-performing vegan mascara out there
I have long eyelashes that are medium brown at the base and blond at the tips, and Ecco Bella’s black mascara really adds body to them while still looking very natural. It does an equal job of volumizing and lengthening. I use this mascara every day and have had no problems with running or irritation of any kind.Like most mascaras, I do find that this product has some slight clumpage issues, but that’s easily remedied by squeezing the loaded wand into a folded tissue and THEN applying it to the lashes. (This gets all the excess goop off the wand and allows for more precise application.) Voilà! No clumping. It does take about 20-30 seconds to dry, which may be too long for some people; but I actually like this window of time because I can go in with a clean wand/eyelash brush and make minute corrections before the mascara dries. My skin is oily, so at the end of the day there’s sometimes a teeny bit of smudge beneath my eye if I’ve worn mascara on my lower lashes. However, I have yet to find a non-waterproof mascara that doesn’t do this. Nothing that a quick finger-swipe won’t fix.The side of the mascara tube has a built-in mirror that can be helpful for application if you’re out and about, although I find it too small to be practical when I’m applying makeup in front of the bathroom mirror. For me, the most attractive feature of this product is that it has the FEWEST ingredients of any mascara I’ve ever seen: Purified water, carnauba wax, palmitric acid (from palm oil), clay, methylparaben, propylparaben, iron oxide.Recommended for those who demand top-quality, cruelty-free products.
Great product with no animal testing/products!
After looking around for a more natural mascara product that was animal friendly this is what I went with. The price here with subscribe and save and 20% off is great. As for the product, I love it. It covers well, looks great and washes off well. I hope Amazon will carry this product regularly.
Not Waterproof, but Otherwise Excellent
This mascara is not the slightest bit waterproof, but other than that I’m very happy with it. The ingredient list is completely clean – nothing toxic, irritating or bad for people or the environment. It looks nice when applied, and can easily create both a soft, natural look or a darker “evening” style with just a few extra coats. It was a little goopy on the first application but has been great since. Will definitely buy again and recommend to others.
flakier than the brown version
I’m a brunette and use both black and brown mascaras that are gluten free. I bought the black and brown mascara at the same time. The black flaked over the course of a day. The brown did not flake and went on silky smooth with no clumps. I’m sticking with the brown one.
My Favorite Mascara By A Long Shot
I love this mascara, and though I have tried many, many other high-end and lower-end mascaras, I find this one to be the best. It’s nice and glossy (but doesn’t smudge easily), lengthens, separates, and adds volume you can build up. Always looks natural with minimal flaking or clumping. I have this in brown also. I also like the packaging. It’s a pretty tube.
Like, Don’t Love
I do like this mascara, but I’ve ended up putting it in a drawer as a back up. While it lengthened, it didn’t thicken as much as I prefer. I like to have long, thick looking lashes and I had to put on a ton of coats to get it to a thickness I like. That said, it has a really nice texture and a rich, black color. Not bad, but I probably won’t buy it again.
Excellent mascara for dry, allergy eyes
I love this mascara. It does go on lightly, but makes lashes beautiful. The best part of this mascara is that I can FINALLY wear mascara again!!!!!! For the past few years mascara has irritated my eyes to the point of painfully itchy, scratchy and water “allergic” eyes. This mascara has no negative effects at all! Really, I don’t even notice I am wearing it until I take it off (easily) at night. No more irritation….just beautiful eyes once again!!
5-star mascara with a 1-star wand
The good news is that Ecco Bella’s mascara looks and feels not much different than Prescriptives False Eyelashes mascara, which has always been my favorite for building long, dark lashes and curl. This is a thick mascara that builds up the lashes, making them look dark, thick and long.Unfortunately, the Ecco Bella comes with a thick wand that has a blunt end that is useless for separating your eyelashes. It has a strong tendency to clump the lashes together. It’s great if you want the Tammy Faye Baker look, but not so good if what you’re looking for is something a bit more natural. Worse, it had me digging out a safety pin to get my lashes to separate. Please Ecco Bella, give us a great wand to go with a great mascara. Until then, I’m sticking with Prescriptives, even though I’d rather have something less toxic near my eyes.
Best Mascara Quest Continues: Part Three
Like many other reviewers, I have never found the perfect mascara. I need to lengthen and thicken, but the mascaras I’ve tried which do that are messy, and tend to make clumps. I have a nice little sonia kashuk comb/brush for eyelashes which helps to remove clumps and lashes sticking together, but would love not to need it. Hoped that this “bare bones” mascara would be great. It’s actually not too bad. Goes on cleanly, but I have to apply it at least three times to get any volume. The big issue is the brush. It is not straight as in the picture on Amazon. It is straight in the container, but when pulled out it snaps to a 60 degree angle to the handle. This is a neat way to hold and apply, but when it goes back into the container any excess mascara is scraped off the brush and onto the lip of the container. After a few days there is mascara all over the edges of the container and the wand handle. Cleaning this off is a mess and a waste. I like the formula-it is very black, but the design of the applicator is terrible.Ecco Bella contacted me shortly after my review went live. They said that the applicator brush should be straight and are sending me a new one. Apparently I received a defective one. I have upgraded my review to three stars and we’ll see how it goes.Jan. 24, 2014: I received the new straight brush and have used it for about a week. Too bad Ecco Bella didn’t send a complete replacement, as I wasted a lot of mascara from my first purchase while trying to use the defective brush. Maybe they wanted to be sure the brush was straight. Bottom line is I really love this mascara. It clumps less than any other I have used. It goes on cleanly and is the blackest, most amazingly concentrated color I have ever seen. And, as other reviewers have said, it does this with just a few ingredients. I still do several applications each time for lengthening and volume. It creates a natural effect which is very flattering without looking like false eyelashes. LOVE IT enough to change my review to five stars!
I love the way this mascara goes on and looks, but it is NOT smear, sweat or waterproof. Don’t cry or you’ll have raccoon eyes!
Like it better than Maybelline
I was just trying to use fewer chemical-laden products, but this stuff is great. I don’t get the same black rings under my eyes at the end of the day. I should note I only apply mascara to upper lashes.
Excellent, natural mascara
I ordered this mascara because it has a low toxicity rating on the environmental working group’s website. I am switching all of my beauty products to natural/toxic free. Ecco Bella is fantastic. It is a depp, rich black that really coats my lashes. It makes them look fuller and longer. Since it is natural, it does smudge a little easier than the other more chemical mascaras. It is definitely not water proof. I am very happy with this mascara and will be ordering again.
There is no better mascara on the market!
There is no better mascara on the market! I’ve been using this for years and absolutely love it! The best~!
Couldn’t be happier
Having finished chemo and radiation treatments I have become quite a ‘post cancer hippie’ with regards to all of my personal products. I don’t want anything with a bunch of toxic ingredients. Once you really start looking at the ingredients list of products… well, it’s more disturbing that I ever realized. I use the EWG skindeep database and try for only products that score a 2 or below, but have a few that are 3 or 4. ([…]This mascara is about as perfect as you can find. It performs wonderfully for having no crazy crap in it. Yes it will run if you cry, but I look at that as a good thing, it’s not exactly normal for mascara not to run – I don’t want those chemicals on my body anywhere! After MUCH research, trial and error – the natural beauty products I have happily settled on that are1)Low in toxic ingredients2)Still quality products that work well and3) Readily available on AmazonBurt’s Bees Radiance Serum(Toxin score: 1)Juice Beauty Refining Finishing Powder(Toxin score: 2)Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Mineral Moisturizer(Toxin score: 3)Larenim Blush(Toxin score: 2)SANTE All-Natural Eyeshadow Stick(Toxin score: 2, the blue, green, rose and pearl are all pearlescent, but the coffee, olive and white are more matte; the rose, white and pearl are good for highlighting.)Ecco Bella Mascara(Toxin score: 1)Lavilin Deodorant(Custom toxin score: ~3)Avalon Organics Vitamin C Cleansing Gel(Toxin Score 3)EO Everyone Soap Lavender and Aloe(Toxin Score: 3)Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo and Conditioner(Toxin score: 2)CoverGirl Outlast All Day Lipcolor (Toxin score: 4, not bad and the performance is worth it to me.)I hope this is helpful for others with the same intention.9/30 update – I decided to start a blog with all of this (and more as I go)- if you’re interested it’s at PostCancerHippie.com or facebook/postcancerhippie
This is a good light weight mascara without awful chemicals in it. I would buy this mascara again. The end.
Best vegan mascara ever
I bought this in an effort to buy only ethical beauty products. It is worth it. I have tried other vegan or at least “not tested on animals” mascaras, and they were clumpy and performed poorly. This one goes on clump-free and lengthens my eyelashes (it doesn’t thicken them, but my eyelashes are just right). The black color is not too harsh (I had found that when buying drugstore mascara, the “very black” ones were too dark; I always had to buy “soft black”–this is equivalent). My coloring is fair skin, green eyes, and either dark reddish brown or deep red hair (my natural hair color, not that I’ve seen in in twenty years, is something like dark ash blonde, but my eyelashes aren’t light). Worth the money.
Great mascara- my lashes are defined and full. Healthy product- scores a 1 on Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database, meaning few concerns for hazardous ingredients. I replaced my "big name beauty brand" mascara with this and my lashes look just as good and I feel better about what I’m putting on my body.Best part? The mirror on the bottle is very handy.
