works well enough, nothing magical though
I’m a long time user of Olay’s “Age Defying” body wash product, so I thought I’d give the “Total Effects” a try. Total Effects comes out of the container more like a cream than a lotion, it’s quite a bit stiffer in consistency than their other products. The only ingredient differences that I can see from the label are mineral oil and jojoba oil, I assume the mineral oil (3rd ingredient on the list) contributes to the texture. After washing with the product my skin does feel soft and moisturized, but not noticeably more than it is with the product I had been using. Not enough more to justify the fact that you get eight more ounces of product for about a dollar less with the “Age Defying” compared to “Total Effects”.Also. If we are trying to make our skin look younger with this product, WHY would we want to it’s fragrance smell like an old lady? Because that’s how the fragrance comes across to me. Quite powdery, kind of camphorish, with a tiny hint of an amber note. It smells very “grandma’s perfume” to me. I much prefer the scents they’ve used in the “Age Defying” and in the Olay “Quench” body wash (and oh how I wish they would bring back the fragrance of the “Scented to Calm” body wash!!!!). I’m the sort of person that won’t use a product if I don’t really like the fragrance, even if it was miraculous, so I’ll be sticking with my old product, both for price and fragrance.
Totally Effective? Not really.
I have been using this product for a few days now. On the back it says “for soft, smooth skin in 1 shower improved elasticity in 1 week young-looking radiant skin in 1 month” After one wash, of course my skin is soft, the directions tell you to use a small amount on a wet puff lather and rinse. Anytime you use a wet puff and soap you slough off dead skin cells and your skin is smoother…is it because I used Oil Of Olay Total Effects Body Wash? probably not. I got the same effect using a bar of soap and the wet puff. Now after a few days of use, did I notice my skin becomng more elastic? Not at all. Maybe in a few more it will?Edit 2/5/2010 – Its been more than a week. NO CHANGE IN MY SKIN, in fact its more irritated than back to normal.I have a problem with products touting the fountain of youth claims…”younger looking skin” Now if you dont have a beauty regimen, and dont wash your face regularly or use products that take off your makeup and moisturize daily then I can see women using this product out of the blue and thinking it made them look and feel younger. The two ingredients they say will help you to become younger are Jojoba butter and VitaNiacin. Jojoba butter is a liquid WAX produced in the seed of the jojoba plant. It is very similar to our own bodies production of “sebum” which is produced in our Sebaceous glands, this is the oil that makes our hair oily as well as our skin. It is what replaced using Whale oil in most beauty products, and is mostly there to soften skin and be a hair moisturizer. VitaNiacin is a unique blend of Vitamin E, Pro-Vitamin B5 (panthenol) and niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which moisturize and exfoliate your skin. But are they the only two ingredients in this body wash? No. You have:Petrolatum mineral oil-a byproduct of producing gasoline. it is lightweight and inexpensive and it is also a comedogenic substance, which is a substance that makes any acne problem worse.Sodium Trideceth Sulfate-A wetting agent.Sodium Lauryl Sulfate= this compound is found in high concentrations in industrial products including engine degreasers, floor cleaners, and car wash soaps. Its used to create lather.Sodium Lauroamphoacetate-another wetting agent.Sodium Chloride-Salt which helps soften skinTrideceth-3-Foaming agent.Guar Hydroxyproplyltrimonium- Thickenerand on and on and on.Listen, this product will make your skin softer…is it anti ageing…I highly doubt that. Cosmetic companies can claim anything they want too, and only have to prove that the item works in some specific way, anti ageing can mean it moisturizes your skin but dont expect your skin not to age.. They throw scientific words at us on the labels but dont have any proof that what they are claiming is true.I wont ever buy this product again, I tend to go for more natural products that I can actually pronounce the ingredients…
I tried a few Olay products in the past, but my skin didn’t react too well to them. Therefore, I was a bit hesitant to try another of their products. My skin is aging well and for some time I was able to just get away with washing and moisturizing with cocoa butter. However, I started to notice little blotches and a lack of luster to my skin tone.I remembered reading an article about an actress who said that one of her few splurges are trips to the spa for body treatments. It reminded me that while I could use a good spa treatment, why not exfoliate with a cleanser at home? I used to use an exfoliating cleanser all the time, but I switched to Ivory bath soap because of its purity.Well after trying the Olay Total Effects, I was overly impressed. Normally when you use a shower wash, your skin feels great until you dry off and there’s no long that dewey, supple feel. However, this product kept my skin so soft and supple long after I had showered and dried off, that I was left stunned. My skin is so soft that I can’t stop touching it. My boyfriend tries to get in on the action, but I tell him to leave me alone (LOL). Kidding. But this product truly works and, OH, it smells AMAZING.As for the exfoliating, I will have to wait and see if my skin tone improves, but I have a feeling that I won’t be disappointed :).
What you need to know:
This stuff is expensive, compared to what I would normally use.And let me admit, I’m not a girl so perhaps that is part of the problem. It did effectively remove grime and dirt after working in the garden. Its ability to remove dirty motor oil is mediocre (which is normal for this kind of product). It did leave my skin feeling very well moisturized, and I was more comfortable throughout the day because of this aspect. I don’t even know what soap I used before this (I buy what is cheapest, which varies), but cheaper soap does not leave my skin feeling as nice and moisturized. The effect lasts well into the day.The fragrance is weak, which is a good thing because I don’t want to smell like a strawberry pie or chapstick all day long. All in all, this is clearly a high quality product that does a great job as both a soap and a moisturizer. I miss it (ran out). You get what you pay for, and if you are willing to pay extra for a high quality body wash: this one is the one I would recommend to you.It doesn’t strike me as an exceptional value, but it’s substantially better than normal body wash.
Overwhelmingly Malodorous, Yet Satisfyingly Moisturizing
Olay is a brand I often associate with old women: any empire built upon the foundation of cold cream and wrinkle-reducer seems poorly prepared to meet the exacting standards of a cosmopolitan 20-something. However, I have been pleasantly surprised with its Total Effects Body Wash (with Deeply Penetrating Moisture).Though shower-time penetration typically falls low upon the list of my daily priorities, I have found Olay’s body wash to deliver on its promise of deep moisturization. Like my intellect and emotional acuity, I find my skin – as well – to be truly and mindfully sensitive to all the various facets of the corporeal world; that this body wish could (and did) allow me to forgo the usual post-shower slather of lotion is truly a testament to its fine provenance. The emission of an overwhelming odor (comparable to the great ‘odor of sanctity’ in its floral and heady notes) upon use can be a bit off-putting. In-shower fragrance intensity is thick, pungent, and somewhat loathingly occupies a niche that can be described only as “artificial.” Post-shower, though, fortunately does not provide a lingering odor.In sum, I remain skeptical of the claim of “total effects,” though unexpectedly pleased with the actual non-drying formula. The odor alone (somewhat like a lab-synthesized, god-hating version of St Theresa of Avila’s stigmata, if Wikipedia is to be of any guidance), though ,is a powerful deterrent enough to avoid future purchase.
It has definitely helped
I’m one of those people that loves to try different body washes, but admit, I’m very picky about the ones I do try. Olay is obviously a well known name and has a good reputation. I do suffer from occasional dry skin, and in the last 2 months, extremely dry winter skin, so the timing was perfect to try this. I’ve been using it faithfully for about the last 3 weeks, and without the aid of applying lotion after a shower to help. Surprisingly, my dry itchy winter skin problems have vanished. While I do feel the need to start applying some lotion, this definitely helped with that painful itchy skin that happens in the cold weather. I’m very sensitive to smells and don’t like alot of body washes on the market, but this Olay Total Effects does have a smell, which I can’t really pin down, but it’s not overwhelming, which is a huge plus in my book. I will definitely purchase in the future.
Leaves Skin Feeling Soft with a Lovely (not overpowering) Scent
Got this for my wife and she is very pleased with it. It goes on nice and she feels she doesn’t need to apply additional moisturizer after she gets out of the shower. And I have to say that her skin is so soft and smells so nice I just can’t keep my hands off of her…
I’m not a big body wash fan but Olay Total Effects is really great!
I really don’t like body washes but I am a big fan of Olay products. I’ve been using their facial products and bath soap for many years at the recommendation of my dermatologist. So, I thought, what the heck…I’ll give Olay Total Effect Body Wash a try…and I must say I really like it. It has a great scent, lathers well, and leave my skin surprisingly soft. I would not hesitate to buy this product again.
A very nice product.
Over the past couple of years I have become quite obsessed with body washes. Why, not really sure. So when I saw this product by Olay, I thought I would give it a shot. The “selling point” with this body wash is it refreshes, moisturizes dry skin, prevents aging and of course cleans.I don’t want to vaunt, but I really don’t suffer from super dry skin. Therefore, I don’t know how well this product works on dry skin. I can say that after using this body wash, my skin isn’t dry and shows no signs of dry skin. The soap/wash itself lathers up rather nice on a wet puff. In addition, a little goes a long way. I must also say that this body wash has a really nice smell. It is really refreshing. I would recommend this to anyone who wants nice skin and would like to stay clean.
Good value, delicious fragrance
Many many years ago, my mother told me, Olay provides good value for an excellent product. She was not wrong. This buttery wash has a delicious floral and melony fragrance and does make one’s skin feel softer. Excellent cleanser and moisturizer.
Makes my skin feel very soft.
Did make my skin feel more moisturized
I liked the way this made my skin feel. One reviewer mentioned that she thought her skin felt smoother because she used the product with a puff, but I always use a puff with shower gel, and this one definitely left my skin feeling softer and smoother. I have quite dry skin, but I tried going without an additional body lotion after my shower and, again, my skin felt better than it usually does without additional moisturizer (not good enough to make me want to skip the moisturizer every time, though). It lathers very well and I liked the thicker consistency, although I wish the bottle were a pump-style instead of squeeze. It’s a big bottle and a little awkward to open (very stiff flip-cap) and use. The cap is on the bottom, though, so it’s probably more efficient than a pump at getting all the product out at the end of the bottle.I do think there’s something that stays on the skin, as I noticed it also made my tub feel slick despite rinsing, and that concerns me a little as I like to use simpler (purer and plainer) products on my skin; I just can’t think it’s a good idea to coat the largest organ of my body with chemicals when I’m cleaning it. I do have somewhat sensitive skin, but fortunately it doesn’t seem to react to any of the (many!) ingredients in this product. I found the fragrance completely inoffensive, but of course that’s a highly subjective judgment.
I have never used a body wash, but got this when I bought some other Oily products. I used it and it is wonderful, the smell is fab and may skin feels so great and smooth. Even though I moisturize right after my bath, this seems to have made my skin even nicer.Love it.
For smooth skin – wash to save time
I really like the shape of the bottle – it doesn’t slip out of your hands in the shower. The Body Wash easily comes out of the bottle – it doesn’t get stuck like some conditioners. It had a very smooth consistency. I rubbed some around my eyes and they didn’t sting. The scent is refreshing, and mild. I found the product refreshing. After about a week of use, it was interesting to see that water drops formed on them like those on a newly waxed car. The 2nd ingredient, after water, is petrolatum – so its a bit like vaseline and the main ingredient in baby oil – hence the waterproofing effect on my arms. It could be good to use this body wash before swimming if you don’t want your skin dried out in a pool. The third ingredient is mineral oil.I am not a chemist, but I tried to decipher each of the ingredients as I believe its important to find out whether they are effective, safe and environmentally sound. Obviously they combine in a mixture, so the properties of individual ingredients may change on being mixed. Also as the product is rinsed off and the user is instructed to use it in a shower – not soaking in the bath – I doubt there’s much harm done even if one or two of the ingredients may irritate skin or lungs in experiments. Here’s my personal take on the remaining 22 ingredients. I attempted to put them in layperson’s language based on Wikipedia entries and various web databases. So if I am wrong please add comments at the bottom of the review.Sodium Trideceth Sulfate – Foaming agent, cleaner; Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – degreaser; Sodium Lauroamphoacetate Genagen LDA, derived from coconut oils; Sodium Chloride Salt; Fragrance – Parfum; Trideceth-3 – Acid Violet 43; Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) butter – Moisturizer and carrier oil; Niacinamide – Vitamin B3, amide of nicotinic acid; Tocopheryl acetate – Vitamin E; Panthenol – Vitamin B5; Soluble collagen ; Acrylonitrile/methacrylonitrile/methylmethacrylate copolymer CH2CHCN; Citric acid – like Lemon Juice; Disodium Edta – dissolves scale; Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride – Improves cleaning; Isopentane – Solvent; Methylchloroisothiazolinone Preservative- anti-fungal, anti-bacterial – effective against yeast, bacteria and fungiMethylisothiazolinone – Preservative and biocide – controls microbial growth; PEG-90M – Binding, Emulsion stabilizing, Viscosity controlling; Sodium Benzoate – bacteriostatic and fungistatic; Sodium Hydroxide – Caustic soda, balances PH (makes it more alkaline); Xantgan Gum – makes it easy to pour. You can save time with the product as it combines washing with moisturizing. Whether it really makes wrinkles less obvious after a month depends on the current condition of your skin and how diligent you are in using the product. If you are a low maintenance person in a rush, using the Body Wash might save you using creams likeOlay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream – 1.7 fl ozand what was traditionally called Oil of Olay.If you are a higher maintenance person who uses creams on the face, then in an age where bare legs and smooth arms are prized it can be used just for the limbs. If you feel its necessary to moisten your skin and soap and water are not enough, then you might want to give this body wash a try.
Way too heavily perfumed
I was excited to get this. However I wasn’t able to use it enough to really give a good opinion on its effectiveness. It has such a strong perfume counter smell. I used it for several days and did not grow any fonder of the scent. It does lather and foam really well and feels very smooth on a poof. It rinses off really well and leaves skin feeling smoother, but I just couldn’t get past the smell.—-Edited:So I ended up using the rest of this body wash when I ran out of my usual. Since it had been over a year, I’m thinking that helped lessen the perfume smell which bothered me so much before.I still wished it had a lighter scent, however, it didn’t seem to linger with me too much beyond the shower. It did help with wrinkle removal, but not in a way I think I was expecting. I’m still pretty young in terms of wrinkles.I never actually used this on my face, but I think that some of the product ended up on my wash cloth, just by being in the shower, and because of that I did wash my face with a very residual amount. I noticed that my one smile line went away as well as the one line in my forehead. So it did as promised. 🙂
I currently purchase this product using the Amazon subscribe and save service. It is much more expensive at my local stores where I live. I can get two bottles on Amazon for the price of one locally. The product itself is wonderful. After only a few showers I could definitely tell the difference of my skin. It is softer and more supple than before. This product also lathers well. I use a nylon puff sponge with this shower gel / lotion, and that provides me with more bubbles and I can use.
Leaves your skin smooth but has a strong scent
This product markets itself as an anti-aging body wash, however, what it really is, is a moisturizing body wash (Someone in the Marketing Department must have come up with the idea that moisturizing your skin improves your skin’s elasticity and thereby is somehow anti-aging).If you don’t have any expectations of suddenly looking younger because you’re using this product, it does work well as a moisturizing body wash. With the second and third ingredients petroleum and mineral oil, it does leave your skin feeling very smooth – you can feel that as you’re washing your skin. Can you use this body wash and not moisturize afterwards? If you don’t as a rule moisturize after you shower and want something that will leave your skin feeling smooth, than this product will work for you. However, it’s winter in New England here and even with a moisturizing body wash, I still feel the need for more lotion on my skin.As far as its scent, personally, I thought that the scent was very strong. If you’re sensitive to perfumes or don’t want to smell like your body wash, you will probably want to pass on this body wash.
Works Well, Non-Oily
This goes on with a very minimal oily feel and washes off while leaving a moisturizing feel. It has a slight scent that is fruit based, perhaps a touch of watermelon. This works well and a little goes a long way. If there were a completely non-scented version I would prefer that, but the scent on this is apparent primarily during application but goes away after the wash.
Olay Body Wash
The scent was nice, but not overwhelming. Also, it did not leave skin too dry. There was no sticky residue, just a clean feeling. Well-packaged, and a well-designed bottle.
You don’t have to use much of this body wash to reap the benefits, really – just a little dab will do ya! I only use about the size of a quarter and it’s more than adequate for my entire body. Smells just wonderful and leaves my skin feeling so silky smooth!!!
Feels good, smells good
And that’s pretty much all there is to say about this product – Olay Total Effects Body Wash feels good and smells nice. I live in the land of hard water (Phoenix, AZ), and even with a whole house filter, the water isn’t all that great. This body wash doesn’t dry my skin out, even with the hard water. My skin feels smooth. The scent is light and doesn’t bother my allergies. This seems to be a good product.
Not a miracle worker but it’s okay
I’ve been using Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging body wash for a couple weeks now. I wouldn’t say this was the best body wash I’ve tried but it’s not the worst either. The soap has a stronger smell. It wasn’t over-powering or a bad smell to me but for some, it might be too over-powering. The body wash is a thicker formula and lathers quite easily. However, when it comes to the promise of softer, smoother skin-I haven’t really noticed a difference. But it doesn’t dry my skin out so I really have no big complaints about that. The one complaint that I have is that after I’m done rinsing my puff out, I noticed that the body wash leaves an oily residue. I’ve also tried washing with a washcloth and noticed the same residue. This is my biggest problem with the body wash.So this isn’t my favorite body wash but I still enjoy using it. I think regular Olay users will enjoy this new body wash.
Best Body Wash
This is the best body wash I have ever used. It is moisturizing and does not make your skin feel dry and taute after a shower. Like most body washes, you do need a shower puff to get adequate foam. It is a great product at a great price, you will not be dissapointed…..
Great for very dry skin but does leave a slight greasy film behind
Both my husband and I used the Deep Penetrating Moisture Body Wash until it was gone so we could compare experiences. We had almost the same reactions although, he reacted more negatively to the slight greasy film left behind that would not rinse off. We both assumed that this was the kind of Body Wash you should use either at night or on the weekend since using it after a hot day gives you the hours that you sleep for the moisturizing film to work its way into your skin and become almost unnoticeable. Using it before going to work could be a problem since it really does leave you feeling as if you just applied the thickest healing body lotion in the beauty aisle over your entire body. I have really long hair and the first time I used it, I got some in my hair and all I could do was twist it up into a bun and hope nobody noticed the grease! So that’s why one star came off. I would guess that it’s the mineral oil and petroleum that are the grease we feel left behindAs for the other GOOD THINGS about the product are that it does help heal dry skin. Some of those same ingredients listed above are also in products for Diaper Rash, Psoraisis and other serious skin problems. With regular uses at night or on weekends, I found that it softened my flaky elbows and improved the appearance of my dry, cracked feet. The product lathers up nicely and has a light, but pleasant scent. I’m happy that they didn’t feel the need to add an overpowering perfume to the product. That would have prevented me from sticking with it. I’m no sure I would say it brightens skin but it does seem to improve the elasticity as promised but only with regular use. I would have been happier to see a list of better quality ingredients and no Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, but that’s what provides the lather. For their first try at a Healing Body Wash, it’s not bad; not bad at all. If they can overcome the greasy film issue, I’d use it before dressing for work.
My skin has never been particularly smooth. As I age, I am beginning to notice "age spots." After using this product for several weeks, I have noticed that the spots are softening and my skin is definitely smoother. I use this product in conjunction with the anti-aging lotion. Both are great products and well worth the money.
I have a been a big fan of Olay products my entire life so I was pleased when I received this body wash. Olay has been good me throughout the years and I’ve never had any problems with their products before and the winning streak continues here.I have used the wash for the past week and I have been very pleased. In comparison with the bar of soap that I used the week before, my skin feels a lot softer and less dry. I didn’t get that grimy feeling you that soap sometimes leaves behind. There is a wonderful scent, not too overbearing but it leaves a nice linger once you’re out of the shower. You don’t need to use a lot to get a rich lather. Overall I’m very pleased with this body wash and am going to continue buying it.
Good Product; Only Lightly Scented
I don’t know about its “anti-aging” claims, but this Olay Body Wash is a good moisturizer. The texture is somewhat thick, but not greasy and the smell is (fortunately) very minimal. I think it does have a “moisturizing” effect and really does make the skin feel smoother. Very nice product.
wife likes this cleansing body wash and I enjoy the fast and inexpensive service. wife has used for a long time
Best body wash I have used.
I have used about everything on the market and still come back to this. All of the Olay Total Effect 7 is great.
luxuriously, decadently creamy body wash
I have sensitive skin that has only recently, in my old age, started to think about occasional dryness, so I often forget to tend to its need for soft, moisturizing products. Olay Total Effects Body Wash felt amazingly soft and creamy in my hand; I expected it to feel greasy when I washed with it. On the contrary; my face felt softer and smoother immediately, but I also felt clean and light. There was not the slightest irritation or allergic reaction (I’m allergic to half the world), and there was no strong fragrance, either. I think I might just have to keep buying this stuff, mightn’t I?
