Honest reviews

It’s a cream. For diaper rash — one wants a barrier…

… the best barrier (from urine, feces) is air — if possible, leave diapers off as much as possible. But if diapers are needed, then the best barrier is an ointment, not a cream. Desitin remains the best choice out there. Plain, generic zinc oxide is much, much less expensive but it is not as smooth as Desitin when applying.

Updating again…Diaper Rash Cream

Reasonably priced and effective, CeraVe is a respected name in skin care.Unfortunately, I have been going back and forth with my review of this product. Vine reviews are to be completed in a thirty day time period. But, I was not about to try anthing new on our baby until I had ‘tested the waters’ personally and researched as well.Ceramides: It appears to be a proven product and that in fact, babies are protected via their natural birth coating with ‘ceramides.’Dimethicone: In limited usage, it can relieve skin irritations quite effectively and based upon research thus far, not a hazard.Zinc oxide: Highly rated creams have up to 40% of this effective long term solution to treating diaper rash…what remains to be determined…do the ceramides in this product eliminate the necessity for so much zinc oxide?Did try the CeraVe diaper rash cream on our adult family member’s skin complaints and it did relieve and help. Most recently tried it on another adult who had teary eyes due to allergy causing irritation on the skin UNDER the eye, NOT IN THE EYE. The CeraVe Diaper Rash Cream relieved the irritation. In both cases, repeated application was necessary.Ultimately tried for diaper rash issues…seemed to burn and was not effective. Creams with 40% zinc oxide performed the best.

Leaves skin clean, smooth and without drying it out!

This baby wash is wonderful! It is smooth and "lotiony" when you put it on and lathers just a little bit without getting bubbles all over. Despite the lotion feel, it rinses off easily. It leaves your skin (an baby’s skin) smooth without drying it out like some baby washes and soaps tend to do. It’s kind of like Dove for babies!

Only one concern

Most people may not have a problem with this, but one of the ingredients is dimethicone. I didn’t notice this when I selected it from the Vine choices. It is probably safer in a diaper rash cream than in facial care, but I still try to avoid it. Dimethicone will provide a thin plastic like layer of protection, so make sure the your babies bottom is totally clean and dry before applying or it will hold in moisture and bacteria. Also, some people have an adverse reaction to it.The skin deep cosmetics data base classifies it as a "moderate hazard" for organ system toxicity, but I’m not sure how that plays out with regard to limited exposure and I haven’t been able to find any horrible downsides. That said, it never hurts to err on the side of caution with infants and children.

This product is both soap and shampoo. I love these types of products. Reasons I love this product: 1-It is good quality and does its job. 2-It is two products in one. So that is one less bottle you would have to take in the shower. Highly recommended.

Finally, no parabens! Too much Dimethicone for us.

I am a big fan of CeraVe products and regularly use the lotion, cleanser, and cream for my face, and the foaming cleanser in the shower as a body wash. My skin is finally looking the way I want it to.I was thrilled to see CeraVe’s new Baby Lotion, as the ingredients were similar to their regular lotion but without the paraben preservatives. I thought that would make this a good match for my skin and my son’s as well.I wish they made the Baby Lotion without adding Dimethicone 1%. I know it’s a skin protectant and works for some folks, but for me, at 1%, it triggers an attack of contact dermatitis (blisters, itching, redness, cracking skin) on my hands and a much milder itching everywhere else. If I did not have this issue, or if CeraVe had left out the dimethicone or used a lower amount of dimethicone, as they do in their other products (Dimethicone must, according to FDA rules, be labeled as an Active Ingredient once it hits 1%, lower than that it is just a regular ingredient and doesn’t require the expanded monograph on the label), this would be my first pick for my son’s sensitive skin as the rest of the CeraVe line has done wonders for me.

wonderful lotion, highly recommended by my dermatologist

wonderful lotion, highly recommended by my dermatologist. This is very rich and moisturizing — works well on babies and older folks alike.

Great for moisturizing

I don’t have a baby but I need constant miniaturization. My skin is exceptionally dry and think if it is safe enough for a baby then it should be fine for me. The fewer the ingredients for me, the better. The only active ingredient is Dimethicone. There are no sulfates and no parabens in this lotion. There is a toll-free number on the bottle in case you have any questions about the product. There is a warning to not use on “puncture wounds, animal bites and serious burns. Keep it out of the reach of children and call the poison control center if swallowed. Since there is now only one number for poison control, 1-800-222-1222, I think it would great if the company would just add this number to their warning message. It goes on non-greasy and lasts for a long time. I applied some to my arms four hours ago and it is still working. There is also not scent. One of the things I hate the most is the smell of baby powder. It seems just a tad expensive for this amount. I would buy a larger amount so I wouldn’t have to pay for shipping. Also, wouldn’t to buy it as often that way.I highly recommend CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Lotion.

Works fine, but is pricey

“CeraVe Baby Wash and Shampoo” is a fine shampoo/body wash for infants. It has a nice scent, and leaves my baby’s skin smooth and clean. However, at $10.00 per 8 ounces, I find it rather pricey, as standard “tear-free” shampoos are sold at a third of the price and work just as well. That being said, my infant has no particular issues with his skin, and therefore I cannot attest to its effectiveness with hypoallergenic children. In all, recommended to those with money to burn; all others may want to give Johnson & Johnson’s Baby shampoo a shot first.

Much less of the active ingredient compared to Desitin

Most of the women in my family have used Desitin to treat diaper rash because that’s the most ubiquitous brand. So, when this popped up I thought it might be worth seeing if another brand is as good or better. Well, it’s not better but…First, the price of Cerave is comparable to other brands. On Amazon this is $9.99 for 3 ounces and Desitin is $13.49 for 4 ounces both prime as of this writing. However, Cerave has the benefit of being available through subscribe and save (at a slight discount), which would be a real bonus for me as I could send this to my niece for her new baby regularly without even thinking about it. Where the two products do not compare is the active ingredient for treating rash.Cerave has only 1% zinc oxide versus Desitin’s 40%! The Cerave also has Dimethicone, but I am not sure that is sufficient to offset if your baby has a serious problem with diaper rash. For prevention, the Cerave has served just fine but I think if a serious case of diaper rash were to develop, I’d feel better using Desitin (now I know why everyone uses it!). Still, it may be worth having both on hand. My niece found that not only was this nice for her baby, but she liked it for herself to treat the rawness she was getting under the nursing bra. It has a nice creamy texture that dries quickly and without residue (that sticky/slimy feel other lotions leave) which is an improvement over Desitin; but, that creaminess comes at the expense of additional zinc oxide.Overall, I think it is worth having both products on hand, but if you had to choose one I think the increased zinc oxide in Desitin makes it the better choice. For those who just want to keep the skin soft, and prefer something more natural, they might want to try the Burt’s Bees diaper ointment which is essentially almond oil.

Great stuff!

Perfect would be an all-in-one shampoo, face wash and body wash I could take on my travels. I am an adult, not a baby, but I have baby sensitive skin. Cerave cream is my salvation. I use it wherever dry itchy skin is a problem, including on my face, except in summer. I like the lotion face wash in winter, and the foaming wash in summer, and thought this would be an all-in-one solution. Alas, it is not strong enough for hair that uses hair products. I will use it when I have a flare up and need an unscented shampoo, though, and use it as face wash at night in summer, because it cleans so gently and thoroughly.Of course, babies don’t usually use hair products, and yours will love this. It rinses easily, foams moderately, and leaves skin clean and soft.

Betsy Sundown, TX

Works, but small bottle.

It works and will do the job, but seems like a very small bottle to me. the scent is OK, and I think the quality is good, but the amount of product is not enough if you’re using it liberally. Great for traveling, but I’d buy a bigger tube for around the house.

Taylor Pawtucket, RI

Great product but a bit pricey

Comparable to Desitin, but a bit pricier. Since we go through so much diaper creme, I think I’ll return to my old brand.

A beauty industry insider’s professional opinion: Better than regular Cerave

This baby formulation is sure to gain cult-status and overtake the regular Cerave because it’s just that good. The biggest change you will notice is the incredible texture. In the beauty industry, it has what we refer to as “cosmetically elegant” viscosity– a full-bodied, non-watery, perfectly orchestrated emulsion that indicates a good-for-you luxe skin feel, massages in smoothly without “soaping”, and absorbs quickly with absolutely no residue whatsoever. Soaks in to protect your skin or baby’s.If you want a “get-dressed-quick” lotion with zero stickiness, no residue, yet is superior in hydration due to the clinical formula, this is it. Other daily lotions (lubriderm, alba, BWC, Skin trip, etc are very watery and you can feel it in the texture. after a few hours, your dry parts are dry again. Not so with the Cerave.Free of all the common no-no’s, Cerave Baby contains Cerave’s signature ceramides, niacinamide, plus 1% dimethicone.

Great lotion, well-packaged, NOT just for babies (INGREDIENTS LIST)

Oh yes, I do love this lotion. I use it for myself and I’m about 6 decades past babydom. Love the well-designed, sturdy plastic bottle and the reliable pump dispenser. But most of all I love the lotion itself. I have had a long-term rash that recurs from time to time. Several different things will trigger it, but a couple of glasses of wine is the most certain. This lotion made the rash go away immediately. And there are no corticosteroids in the lotion that have the unwanted side effect of making skin thinner. Instead, the lotion relies upon some truly great ingredients, including dimethicone, which is so soothing; niacinamide, which improves skin’s elasticity and barrier function; ceramides, which are proven to make skin healthier by increasing water retention and cell regulation; and more (full ingredients list below). Don’t be concerned about the various "alcohols" because they aren’t the dreaded denatured or isopropyl alcohol, but rather fatty alcohols that function as emollients and emulsion stabilizers. Don’t believe me? Check wikipedia, or beautypedia, or any of the other reliable websites that define the constituents of our modern potions, lotions, and cosmetics.Aesthetically, the lotion is pleasing. No fragrance is added, which I really appreciate. It has a lightly cooling effect when first applied. The lotion texture dries nicely without going through a sticky phase. It totally disappears into the skin without leaving a visible topical residue. For me, the relief to itchy, dry, flaky, parched skin is immediate. I highly recommend this "baby lotion" for adults too!Ingredients List:Active Ingredients: Dimethicone 1% (Skin Protectant)Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax, Niacinamide, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6-II, Ceramide 1, Hyaluronic Acid, Allantoin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Lauric Acid, Zinc Citrate, Polygylceryl-3 Diisostearate, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Arginine PCA, Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, EDTA, Sodium PCA, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer.

Good skin and hair cleanser for sensitive skin

This is a very nice cleanser for people with very sensitive skin. We have two family members which are pretty sensitive to soap, and this product has worked great.Likes:- Thick, goes a long way, unlike some of the more watery cleansers out there.- No fragrance.- Works good as a shampoo too. I was skeptical at first, but hair seemed to be clean and manageable after use.Dislikes:- The pump top came off in shipping. They need a more robust design if they’re going to ship this. The packing for this review item was not up to usual Amazon standards, so you might not have this issue.

All in One.

CeraVe Baby Wash and Shampoo is great for your baby’s skin and hair. The baby formula is great because it doesn’t have any perfumes or scents and this keeps your baby’s skin from drying out and becoming irritated. This wash is also good because there is no sticky film and your baby is clean from head to toe.The CeraVe baby wash and shampoo can also be used as a face wash for adults if you have sensitive skin. I have very sensitive skin and can’t trust my skin to just any face wash and I tried this and this formula and it is perfect for my face it didn’t dry it out and my face felt so smooth and clean aftewards

Love it

I have to let you know, I haven’t tried this on baby skin, only my adult very sensitive skin. I absolutely loved it. It made my arms and hands so very soft, but it wasn’t greasy at all. You can feel the protection quality of the lotion. The scent is very light, and disappeared once the lotion soaked in. Like I said, I haven’t tried this lotion on a baby, but because of my sensitive skin I often get baby lotions–and this one is great.

Dermatologist recommended for eczema.

Great moisturizer. It is unscented and hypoallergic. The cream was recommended by our dermatologist for eczema. I prefer the cream because it is thicker, but the lotion works great as well.

Velma Oldhams, VA

Nice to apply, no graininess.

I think A&D; zinc blue tube is the best and most economical diaper cream that is generally available. However, it does leave a grainy feeling when you are washing your baby’s crack. So I happily tested the CeraVe cream to see if it would be any better:1. The cream is truly creamy, like thick lotion, and goes on very smooth. In fact, sometimes I just put a big dollop around the hole and let it smear by itself when I put the diaper on (assuming that the rash is mild).2. It is decently effective. It slowly improved the rash, but A&D; seems to work faster.3. Best of all, the next time I wash my baby’s bottom, there are hardly any residual zinc clumps. That’s a lot better!

Wonderful lotion

I’m in hot steamy central Florida and come summer am always on the lookout for lotions that don’t leave a heat trapping film on my skin. I also greatly prefer unscented versions. Unlike most lightweight lotions his one comes out thivk. It’s thick yet it completely sinks into my skin eliminating excess dryness with no residue. The price is too steep for my budget but if I could I would buy this lotion.

Lara Fayette, OH

It’s about time

Provides great moisture barrier without being sticky and gunky, giving the very sensitive raw skin a chance to heal. Big plus is that there’s no strong smell.

Kenya Rockfall, CT

Great texture and it works well

I use Boudreaux’s Butt Paste on my baby for any diaper rash issues and I have had no issues with how it works. I decided to give the CeraVe Diaper rash cream a try as it didn’t have a scent and I see it was developed by pediatric dermatologists.I am pleased with this cream- firstly it’s comparably in price to the Butt Paste (though Boudreaux’s does have an extra ounce I think). Secondly and most importantly, it is sooo easy to go on… it glides on there. If you’ve used BB Paste you know how tacky and sticky it is, and then such a pain to get off your fingers. FInally, while I don’t mind the scent of BB Paste, I like that the CeraVe doesn’t have such a strong one. With regards to redness and diaper irritation (which I guess should have been my first point!) CeraVe works well, no complaints there whatsoever.

Natasha Milnor, ND

This is unlike the ohter baby lotions out there. First of all, it has no scent. It sinks right in to the skin for instant softness and moisture. The other lotions make the skin feel greasy, but this one just sinks right in. It’s gentle yet effective.great product

Tia Tariff, WV

An excellent lotion for adults too. Completely recommend it.

I really like this lotion–better than anything other general-use lotion I’ve ever tried! It has a pleasing (non)scent and texture, dissolves into the skin without greasiness or nasty residue, and keeps my skin soft for a good long time. It really does feel good to use–it’s not watery or overly-unctuous, not oily, and not strong-scented. It also washes off easily if you need to wash it off. I’m certainly no baby and don’t even have a baby in the house, but I do have an adult here with very sensitive skin and chemical sensitivities–so we tend to buy baby lotions, which are much gentler to the skin and tend not to have the harsh scents and gooey feel of other adult-marketed lotions.I don’t use makeup so I don’t know how it works under makeup, but I bet it’d be okay–it really does just totally absorb. I didn’t even notice it after applying it.This one’s a keeper. I’m absolutely going to be buying it again. I’m completely happy with it.

Using on adult skin – so nice

I got this lotion for me (40 year old woman) it is so nice when you don’t want over scented lotion that is amazing in healing dry skin. I know it’s for babies but it is of parabens and phthalates and great for delicate baby skin — why not treat yourself. With more skin showing in the summer – this is great product to use daily.

Fabulous Lotion

Yes, this may be meant for babies…but it’s fabulous for adults too! Very soothing for dry, irritated skin. This product contains hyaluronic acid, which is one of the best moisturizers on the earth. Cerave makes very high quality products. I tried their SPF 30 sunscreen and love that too. Highly recommended.

Janelle Sun Valley, AZ

Really nice lotion and Adults can Use it Too

This is a smooth, non-sticky lotion. What I love is that it has no noticeable fragrance. I am sensitive to many perfumes and even some "natural" odors so this is great for me to use.Babies will benefit from that too. Your baby cannot tell you if the smell bothers them, although if they react strongly (i.e., coughing or choking) to a perfume you can probably figure it out. But when babies are just slightly annoyed from a fragrance, all they can do is sniff or get cranky. Children and adults often react that way to fragrances too. This lotion was developed to be non-toxic and it seems to be, at least with our current knowledge. It’s very pleasant.

Another Wonderful CeraVe Product

CeraVe makes numerous high rated skin products that it sells at reasonable prices (cleansers, creams, lotions, sunscreen). I fill everyone’s Christmas stockings with these products. Paula Begoun specifically recommends CeraVe as a good option for baby products because they offer fragrence-free products. Thus I was anxious to try out the CeraVe Baby Wash on my youngest grandchild. My grandson has thin, light, pale blond hair. The unscented shampoo cleaned without lathering and left his hair and skin soft and clean. I will definitely buy again. Amazon, please add to your Subscribe and Save store.

Great Stuff

I had been reading that ceramides are very good for the skin. My wife and I tried out CeraVe moisturizing lotion (regular version) which features ceramides and really liked it. The version for baby is reviewed here.I think the regular and baby versions are similar. The regular may use a different emulsion technology. The baby edition has niacinamide, zinc and vitamin E that don’t appear in the regular version – all good for skin.I put some of the baby version on my hands and it went right in, had little or no smell and left my hands in great shape. Not greasy and not even slippery after a minute or two. Just smooth. Great feeling.I think I like the baby version more than the regular version to tell the truth. I have seen other versions of CeraVe, but not sure about them.I can say now that the baby one is pretty great, even though I haven’t been a baby for over 50 years. 🙂
