- Reveals fresher-looking, smoother skin
Good but not Great
This is a review of the new Aveeno Active Naturals Smart Essentials daily detoxifying scrub packaged in a 5.0 oz squeeze bottle. This is just one of the products in Aveeno’s new line of Smart Essentials. They also offer a Pore Purifying Facial Wash, a Daily Nourishing Moisturizer with SPF 30, a Nighttime Moisture Infusion and an Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment. But today we will concentrate on the Daily Detoxifying Scrub Active Naturals Southernwood. I received this product yesterday so the following review is basically my first impressions. The first thing I noticed about this product upon my first use was the consistency. I squeezed about a quarter sized amount onto my hand. The opening is smaller than other product lines which allowed the scrub to dispense in a nice controlled manner, allowing me to get just the right amount I needed. I hate the ones that just “splat out” leaving me with 3 times as much in my hand as I wanted (ladies, you know what I am talking about). The consistency is a medium thick, creamy, gel-like substance. I applied it to my wet face (I always moisten my hands and face before applying a scrub as I find I can smooth it over the entire surface better). The scrub spread smoothly as I applied in circles. There was not an immediate sense of grittiness as there is with other scrubs on the market. It did feel a bit stickier than I normally like however. The fragrance was very slight. It is a very clean smell with a hint of coconut. After about a minute of gentle facial massage I rinsed the scrub off. I normally don’t use a wash cloth to remove a scrub because I feel it would be too harsh on top of exfoliating ingredients but I found I HAD to with this scrub. The stickiness aspect I mentioned earlier was just not allowing the product to rinse off with just water. However, using the washcloth did NOT seem harsh to my skin with this scrub. After drying my face I still felt some small gritty particles clinging to my skin. I let my skin air dry for about 5 minutes and then gently brushed the dried particles away before applying moisturizer and it was fine but considering this is marketed as more of a daytime scrub you might not have that extra 5 minutes in the morning to wait.I am not really sure which of the following ingredients are the exfoliating ones and it wasn’t really clear on Aveeno’s website. I also didn’t know what Southernwood is so I got the following from Aveeno’s website:Found in the gardens and foothills of Europe, Southernwood has traditionally been used for its digestive purposes. Now, scientists for the AVEENO brand have extracted the plant’s natural combination of sugars and polyphenols that have demonstrated antioxidant activity and can help to bind water to skin to fortify the moisture barrier. Here are the other ingredients as listed in order on the bottle: Water, Glycerin, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Polyethylene, Glyceryl Stearate, Lauryl Glucoside, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance, Sodium Hydroxide, Cetearyl Olivate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Wax, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit, Chlorphenesin, Sorbitan Olivate, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Capralhydroxamic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Artemisia Abrotanum Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Hydrolyzed Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum, Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum.I am no holistic, naturalist expert, but their were only a couple of ingredients that sounded “natural” to me. The first 6 listed are standard ingredients in most facial, body and hair washes on the market. You want to remember that the order of ingredients indicates the amount of that ingredient in the product. I was confused when I read the ingredients on the back of the bottle that it didn’t actually include Southernwood. I googled the Artemisia Abrotanum Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract and found that it is the Latin name for Southernwood. Considering how far down on the ingredient list it is, I am not sure how beneficial this ingredient really is to the product. Now, I am not knocking Aveeno. I happen to love a lot of their products, especially the Simply Ageless line. I am just saying that maybe when you make the decision to buy this product you buy it based on Aveeno’s stellar reputation and your personal experience with the products in their other lines.Bottom Line: The product did its job. Is it because of the natural ingredients in the formula? To me that is unproven. Is it any better than a lesser priced facial scrub? The jury is still out on that. I will continue to use the product until the bottle is empty and will report back with an extended review.
This product is oil-free but it leaves you skin very oily. I would not recommend this Aveeno moisturizer for anyone with oily skin like myself. I find myself having to wipe off the excess oil even after applying this moisturizer. I would not recommend anyone to buy this product because it’s just plain to oily. It leaves my skin feeling very dirty with that “greasy,” look to it. I definitely would not buy this product ever again.
I’ve used Aveeno lotions before so I was curious about their facial scrub, and it did NOT disappoint!Personally I thought the smell could’ve been stronger. You do get a pleasant whiff from time to time but its hardly noticeable. Still it doesn’t smell bad so overall that’s a good point. It feels great on the skin, not too rough. It did take a bit of time to wash all of it off, but once I had I noticed that my skin was soft, clean, and glowing. I was very pleased with the results.I looked at the price and honestly for the size of the bottle I’m not sure if its worth it. The bottle will last you several months if you use it sparingly, but if you’re looking for something to use everyday or if you tend to use a lot, then it won’t last very long. I think you’d get pretty much the same thing from a different (cheaper) facial cleanser. But this one is a good quality product and if its worth it to you, then I would recommend purchasing it.
just not for me
This daily detoxifying scrub is ok. You only need a small amount to wash your entire face, so the 5.0 oz container will last quite some time. It has an extremely mild smell, which is important for me because I dislike most strong scents. My face did feel clean after using it, and it didn’t dry out my skin nearly as much as some cleansers I’ve tried. However, after using if for about three weeks, I noticed an increase in acne. I think for my skin, I’m better off using a product with salicylic acid. But, if you don’t have a problem with acne, I would certainly recommend this cleanser.
Gentle and refreshing
In the past I used and liked Aveeno products, but given their relative high prices I went back to store brands. (We are economically stretched.) It was nice to have a chance to try out this “Smart Essentials” facial scrub. (I received one tube for trial, although when purchased this particular ASIN comes in a 2-pack.) It’s still not cheap, but I’ve discovered that if you use Amazon’s Subscribe and Save feature, you can save 15% on top of the 5% off retail Amazon offers, which makes it more attractive. The scrub itself feels extra-gentle, just like most Aveeno products. The scrubbing action leaves a refreshing and clean sensation, something that cannot be said of certain scrubs I’ve bought and used in the past. I don’t know if it’s for real or just “placebo effect,” but I think my skin does now look smoother and maybe also younger (but I doubt the last part!). I like the result! I’m not sure yet if this is the perfect scrub out there, but I’m very tempted to buy the 2-pack once I run out of this tube, especially as Amazon makes it affordable to a poor person like myself.
I’m a guy.
Yah. I’m a guy. And I’m reviewing this – a woman’s facial cleanser. Well, equal rights, right?!? This stuff doesn’t scrub as much as I’d like. If you’re looking for a scrubby facial cleanser, this ain’t it. It’s a very gentle type of facial scrub. Also – I found it to be heavily perfumed. Like, excessively so. I mean – women wear enough crap already – perfumes, makeup, moisturizers, etc. All those smells can combine to smell like a giant mess. You don’t need MORE fragrance on your face, if you ask me. This stuff made me smell like a girl. So, if you’re a girl you’ll probably like it. I felt it was too strongly scented once my face was rinsed off. I will use the whole tube – so if I notice better or worse shaving after using it, I’ll let you know. Stay tuned, kiddos…
Decent fragrance; okay exfoliation.
PROS:- decent exfoliation- not too “perfumey”, although the scent is not as natural as I’d like- non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores)- oil-free- hypoallergenic- formulated with antioxidant Southernwood extractCONS:- doesn’t exfoliate as well as a bar of Lava soap:WD40 Co 10185 Lava Soap Bar- not environmentally-friendly- it’s really only “hypoallergenic” if you are NOT allergic to commercial/artificial fragrancesSummary and Tips:The term “detox” is cliched, and devoid of all meaning when cosmetics marketers slap it on a label, so “daily detoxifying scrub” really just means “daily scrub.” The “active naturals” trademark and southernwood extract are primarily marketing agents, not exfoliating or “detoxifying” agents. Southernwood extract is not even listed on the Ingredients list on the back of the tube, so I’m not sure how it figures into the recipe? The main ingredients of this product are just water and glycerin, so save your money and just buy a bar of Lava soap, or make your own sugar scrub at home -The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products
Daily detoxifying scrub
~This daily detoxifying scrub is a new product from Aveeno. Typically, I don’t purchase Aveeno products for my skin care; in fact, I think the last Aveeno product I bought was their oatmeal bath, when my kids had the chicken pox. After using this facial scrub for the last few days, I might try a few more Aveeno products. The Directions say to moisten face and squeeze scrub into hand. `Massage gently in circular motion over face. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry before applying moisturizer.’ It also says on the 5 ounce tube: `It gently polishes away debris, revealing a brighter, smoother look.’ That is exactly what it did for me. My skin felt and looked smooth and refreshed, and my moisturizer went on effortlessly afterward. A little dab of the scrub goes a long way, so this 5 ounce tube should last for a few months. My sensitive skin also likes that it is oil-free, hypoallergenic, non comedogenic, and soap-free.
aveeno smart essentials scrub
The beads are really tiny so you get a really good soft scrub. It,s not real foamy when used with water, so it’s easy to keep away from my eyes. My skin feels soft as if I had skin cream on, when I wash it off, but I use a skin cream anyway,as recomended. I like Aveno products in general, I buy their skin care line as well as their lotion, I even buy the baby products for my grandson, so if you like Ave no, you won’t be disappointed by this product.
Does an excellent job of cleaning delicate skin – it’s not irritating at all, doesn’t break me out or turn my skin red, but takes the oil off. I like that there’s not an overpowering scent to it, and it cleans but doesn’t leave my skin dried out. For the price, I still like another product slightly better, but I’d buy this on sale.
My new favorite face wash!
I have long been a fan of St. Ives Apricot Scrub, but could only use it a few times each week due to the abrasive nature of the large scrubbing particules. I am thrilled to have found this cleanser, because it uses microcrystals to accomplish the same effect, so I can use it every day without the irritation of my previous favorite cleanser. After one use with the Aveeno Smart Essentials scrub, I noticed smoother skin. My cheeks were so healthy-looking and soft, without any dry spots. Within five uses, I noticed more evenness to my skin tone. The only negative I have found is the odor. It’s not overly unpleasant, but it’s not very refreshing or pleasing either. If you have skin like mine, a little dry in spots, a little uneven in tone, I would highly recommend this cleanser. It took care of any problem areas without losing moisture, and for that I’m more than willing to give up the citrus burst smell of my old cleanser!
Wake up with beautiful skin, great smell, no breakout
At first I wasn’t used to the sticky thickness and the strength of the fragrance (even though it’s very nice and fruity), especially in the summer it’s a little too thick to use, but in the winter it is very moisturizing and I’m so used to it I don’t smell it during my sleep. I do enjoy the smell when I’m putting it on. I notice I don’t get any breakouts and it seems my skin looks better in the morning probably because of the vitamins in it. I’ve become really impressed with this and look forward to putting it on, and want to try the other products like the eye roller.
very nice product
I have been using this over a week or so now and like it very much. It has not transformed my face into flawless porcelain skin, but it does seem to help give a little bit fresher look to my complextion. I have sensitive skin and so have been using it every few days rather than every night.Besides my face, I have been using it on my elbows and feet. My feet have lost their dry winter look and are ready for summer sandals now!The scrub has a very slight scent that is clean and fresh smelling. It does not linger very long after you use it which is nice. Some scents bother my allergies but this one did not.Aveeno did a nice job with this product.
Delivers What It Promises
So the marketing hype swore that I would get a “brighter, smoother look” from using this scrub. I’ve heard that before. I received this and the first thing I thought was that packaging was nice. I wouldn’t mind it out on my counter. It’s a stand-up tube so all the product flows down. I like that better than a squeeze bottle where I don’t think I’m getting everything out.I’ve used this now a couple of times. Wanted to make sure of the results and the over-all satisfaction. I’m pleased with the results. My skin does look smoother. It feels cleaner to me as well. There’s definitely a softness but that could be the moisturizer I use.Drawbacks of this product are that it just does not rinse easily. I’m no slouch in the “sluice your face” department but this stuff took some time and attention to get off. Also the scent for me is a bit sweet. My personal preference leans towards things with a more citrus-y smell in personal care products. This is why I wouldn’t give it five stars.Pluses are the way it feels when I scrub my face. There are little beads that the marketing hypes says are loofah. I’ll accept that at face value (you should pardon the pun). I know that the product feels gently and not harsh (unless I was scrubbing too hard and then ouch–but that’s on me and my enthusiasm.) I know that when I patted my face dry after the long rinse, my skin glowed. Yes it was red for a bit but I have fairly sensitive skin.Bottom line, will I buy this product when this tube is empty? Yes, I most definitely would. I think anyone who wants an easy, daily scrub for their skin would like this one.
Better than expected
I am usually very skeptical about beauty products because they usually oversell the benefits. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the Aveeno Smart Essentials Scrub. It promises to gently scrub away dead skin and other things that make your skin look dull.I’ve used it for several days now and noticed a difference in the luminosity of my skin right away (and trust me when I say it hasn’t been this way for at least two decades). I have extremely sensitive skin so I’m very picky about what I use. It didn’t make my skin breakout, and most importantly it didn’t dry it out either as oftentimes can happen with a scrub wash. The best endorsement that I can give this product is that I plan to buy it again. It exceeded my expectations and will continue to use it every day.
Very Good Daily Cleanser with Mild Scrub
This is a very good mild facial scrub that you won’t hesitate to use on a daily basis. Only a small dollop is needed for full coverage. There is a very mild citrus scent which is detectable for a few hours after use but is not heavy enough to be cloying. (I am sensitive to perfumes, potpourri and the like and this cleanser did not bother me.) There are a modest amount of scrubbing beads in the product and these feel smooth on the face and there is no irritation after application. Once the scrub is washed off your face feels smooth and quite clean. My skin feels clean and refreshed after using the scrub and that is pretty much all I expect from a product of this sort.Recommended
If no other review has provided you any information on whether this moisturizer is good for oily skin, let me be the first. I have oil, acne prone skin. The only reason I purchased this product is because I was researching on the internet what would help with my sebum that is way over produced at that time of the month, and one suggestion was vitamin A. Well this was the only thing in the store that had vitamin A written on the label. This may work for some and if you have dry skin I could see that this would be a great face moisturizer. HOWEVER, if you have oily skin, don’t bother. It is very heavy and not only that I woke up with a new pimple and my face was itchy around my jaw line, which is where I break out often. It does have a strong smell, which isn’t a bad smell, but it is strong. So hopefully I have helped someone that is looking for a little research on what type of skin this is for and what type it is NOT for.
A little goes a long way
Used this product for about 2-1/2 weeks before writing this review. I can easily see one tube lasting for 2 or more months as only a tiny bit is needed to massage into your face and neck when the skin is already wet.I am very sensitive to allergens and have a problem with many chemical scents. The barely there scent is pleasant and only noticeable when I brought the tube up to my face for a sniff test. I don’t notice it at all when applying the product. My face does feel smoother than when just using my moisturizer alone, and I was surprised that this was accomplished with so little exfoliating granules. Although part of me wishes there was a tad more of them per application.Apparently the detoxifying aspect of it works since I’ve broken out in a couple of places. That too seems to be gentle or I would have expected a much larger break out at once to get rid of the toxins in my pores.Would I purchase this product when it runs out? Yes, I believe I will.
Smart Wash of Your Temple
If you mix fat (Coconut in this case) with citric acid and sugar you get soap. Aveeno mixes in 20 more ingredients to create this luxurious buttery soft soap that refreshes your body. The fundamental making of a soap hasn’t changed in two centuries–in fact, exactly two centuries ago Michel Eugene Chevreul invented the soap we’re familiar with in 1811. But the magical embellishments you find in “Aveeno Smart Essentials” are astonishingly appealing to the olfactory sense and of touch.
You will have beautiful soft clean skin after use!
I am constantly on the search for a daily face wash that will exfoliate my skin but is gentle enough to leave it shiny, clean and soft. Aveeno Smart Essential Scrub hits the spot! First of all, the product smells divine, not medicated or overly powerful, but it has a nice lemony smell, the container says it is sandalwood. The actual product is not harsh or irritable on the skin, the exfoliants are very subtle unlike the Peach Scrub kind from St. Ives, which I find to be too rough for my skin. After washing off the product, my skin was super soft and glowing. It looked really clean and fresh and I was really happy with it.
Smells great; cleans gently
Aveeno’s new Active Naturals line promises to use natural ingredients to improve your skin by “keeping the good in and the bad out”. The daily detoxifying scrub contains Southernwood extract, an herb which, taken orally, has been used to remedy digestive and other problems. Aveeno’s scientists have also found Southernwood to be an antioxidant which helps keep skin moist. This scrub goes on smooth, exfoliating without being harsh. The smell is delightful–almost citrusy, certainly energizing. It’s too soon to tell if this will make my skin brilliant, but for my middle-aged, multi-problem skin (leftover teenage acne plus sun damage plus incoming wrinkles) this really does the trick. I feel clean and refreshed–less stressed– and always look forward to washing my face with this product.
Good facial exfoliator
First, you would never know this is just made for the face because nowhere on the packaging does it mention it’s a facial scrub. However, if you read the directions it tells you to apply it on your face.I’ve tried it for several days and like it. The cleanser has an acceptable citrussy green tea smell and it gently exfoliates my skin leaving my face feeling very smooth. Overall this is a decent facial cleanser.
brighter & smoother as promised
This Aveeno product is really making my complexion brighter & smoother as promised. I’ve been using Aveeno Positively Radiant cleanser for about a month & I like it better than about 6 other drugstore products I’ve tried. I use it with the Clarisonic skin machine that I’ve used for about a year. I noticed a difference with the first day of using Aveeno Smart Essentials Scrub. Several old dark spots from healed acne began to flake off. These spots usually take months to fade so that was exciting. It’s only the 3rd day & I notice the skin on my forehead looks smoother & younger! My mineral powder make-up goes on more evenly too. I tend to get a couple breakouts a month that lead to this uneven pigmentation. I think I’ve finally found the best facial cleanser for my 56 yr old complexion. I can hardly wait to see the improvement next week.
Aveeno Smart Essentials Heavenly Scrub
So I added in the “heavenly” in the title. If you use this scrub, you too will feel the need to use such descriptions. My skin has been radiant and free of blemishes the entire time I have used this product, which has been approximately two weeks now. That is a small miracle for me. Especially since I just began a new job and am taking on stress. My skin has not made the public aware of any stress. Instead, I have been able to put my best face forward and feel confident. I love this scrub and highly recommend it. So long as Aveeno makes this great product, I will certainly keep stocked up on it.
Simply the best!
I’ve tried a lot of sunscreens for sensitive skin. This is the best. I’ve been using Aveeno’s moisturizers with SPF for years now. I can use it everyday without it causing acne or blocking my pores. I never burn in the sun when I use it. It has a decent scent as well. I used to cheap out on sunscreen, but I don’t now. Those cheaper sunscreens just sit on the shelf while I luxuriate in splendor of a daily use lotion with no headaches. It’s a bit more expensive than other brands, but really worth it. Even when I use it a lot, I only use up a bottle or two per year. A good investment to keep my skin looking and feeling good.
Just what I was looking for
This past winter was especially bad on my skin. My skin, especially my face, was dull and dry and no matter what I did it didn’t seem to get any better. I thought I would give this product a try. This really helped to get rid of the dullness that my skin had and after I used this scrub and washed my face, my moisturizer has been doing a much better job of replenishing my skin. Great product and I have already recommended it to several people.
One of the few products that I have used that does leave me feeling fresh and clean
I really like the Aveeno Smart Scrub. My wife also likes it. The scrub is a great way to use really any time. It is a great start in the morning and I also enjoy using it before going to bed. It is mildly exfoliating and when rinsed away seems to take any oils and dirt straight off your face. It does a great job on getting any deposits off your face.It has a mild fruity scent to me, fine for a woman and ok for a guy. The scent is not overpowering. It makes my face feel completely clean and fresh. Highly recommended.
The best moisturizer every
I use this stuff regularly everyday. I have oily skin, mostly in the T-zone. All I have to do is think about zits and end up with a bump on my face. Though I use this regularly 1 – 2 times a day along with the matching facial scrub, I do not breakout. My skin responds well and my blemishes are less noticeable. This line of products are a staple in my facial products. Hope it is never discontinued.
Cleansing & Refreshing!
I love Aveeno Skin products and have been using them for years. When I was offered a chance to try this product, I literally jumped at it.This scrub has a gently pleasant citrus aroma and strong polishing beads that are in the scrub itself. The beads are soothing and not in the slightest bit abrasive. My skin felt slightly tingly and literally glowed after using this. I recommend this product highly and suggest that those who use it do so daily. Use a small amount and that way your supply will last you for months.
Fine grain scrub
I like this product. The grains are fine. I used this twice a day to clean my face. I feel my face very clean afterwards. Was using Cetaphil and looking for a different facial cleanser. The only concern i have with this product is if you have a VERY dry skin, this will make your skin even drier. Use a light moisturizer as needed.
